Companions hidden benefit

Tanking practice. I tank, I know I can improve, always trying to, but there's no tanking dummy (DPS get all the glory).

Take Mirri (or Bastion) through a vet dungeon and see how far you can get before they die. Just you, and the companion. It's painfully slow, but that's not the point. Just keep em alive (they love to position themselves all wrong, stand in stupid etc.).

Similarly, my healer enjoys using Mirri as a dps and keeping her alive. Or Mirri as a tank and keeping her alive while adding damage. :)

Don't confuse it with the real thing.

If DPS repeatedly stand in stupid, they should die. Not the tank's job to go crazy trying to keep everyone from killing themselves. Tank's job is to keep the main targets focused and group up enemies.

For me, a huge benefit is that they will fight even when I can't see an enemy, and thus save me from dying.

Yes, this happens regularly. Enemies won't load in, so I can't attack them, but they can still hurt me. Yesterday, it happened during a world boss daily. The boss never loaded in until he was dead. But because of having mirri with me, it still counted for me.

Oh, absolutely, but I wouldn't confuse a dummy run with the real thing either.

How to deal with bad DPS in a dungeon. A messed up of way of looking at it but interesting.

Of course through the power of DPS checks and mechanics some dungeons won't be completed. See March of Sacrifices 2nd boss.

Creative, but it would probably be more productive and fun to tank normal DLC dungeons. Have the difficulty above the base, there are actual mechanics so everyone tends to stay as a group, and you don't have to deal with the fake tank. As you are the tank.

It can be very misleading - the companions are magically immune to a whole load of mechanics, including key ones in Wayrest 2 for example so they need to be managed quite differently.

The best tanking dummies I've found are the ones that fly around Elsweyr. For resource management, sustain and chunks of mechanics and AoE they are actually really good.
