This is a prime example of ZOS and their "communication" - only talk about it on stream and the forums. Every casual player ingame has no idea what's going on. It's not like they could send literally everyone a system mail to inform them about what they are doing
But yeah, this is temporary. It's a test. What they are testing nobody knows. My guess is they want to test the activity and longevity of a pure deathmatch queue. If activity increases or stays high enough for an extended amount of time they might consider adding a deathmatch only queue alongside the old random mode queue or something.
The random mode queue is the default state and it will return eventually. We just don't know when.
If they wanted to do a good test, they should leave the random option vs the boring deathmatch only.

Many players do not find deathmatch boring. Objective battlegrounds can be awful. Imagine queueing for 15+ minutes only to have the battleground last 3 minutes because someone rushed to capture the relic. It's extremely frustrating.
A few days ago I noticed that the Random Battlegrounds returned, which seemed amazing at first. But it seems bugged. The Random Battlegrounds are ALWAYS Deathmatch Battlegrounds anyway.
This broken queue system is starting to get ridiculous.
Any progress towards a whole swatch of achievements and titles—not to mention other rewards—is being impaired by this broken *** system.
The system needs fixed so that the random queue can work as expected, ie. each BG game mode having a relatively equal chance of being triggered over a period of time.

Is this problem not solved yet?
I gave up playing battlegrounds since the last year because I never got anything than the boring deathmatch mode.
Now, because of the PVP event I'm trying it again, and once again I always get deathmatch.
I always select "random battlegrounds" I always get deathmatch.
This doesn't make any sense.

It's not a bug, it was well intended because they changed the entire queueing system and how it functions. It was actually a test to see how it would effect BG population, and they stated they'd be reverting the change in the next update. So for the entire event you will most likely only receive TDM's. It'll be in place until march when the update rolls out

If it is intentional then it's even worse and more disrespectful towards players. Anyway, it doesn't make any sense. I still have the random option... what does it mean now? What's a random deathmatch then?
Most probably they did something wrong and came with that excuse to avoid fixing the problem. And the number of players is stupid. Like me, many players still play it a lot, for achievements, tickets or to complete sets. The big difference is that now I hate the game that I used to enjoy a lot. If they are ok with that, then it's all good. Maybe it's a test to find out how long it takes for us to completely give up.
