Why does my companion stay dismissed?

every time I change zones or I kill something he returns I am constantly dismissing him to no avail.

    do they hate you? I hear if you are not liked by your companion meaning you do enough they hate you they bail on you.

    They have that problem, standing on loot and such, from the start!
