So where am I from?

Go to Blackwood, NPCs call you outsider, even if you are an imperial.

Go to Wrothgar, NPCs call you newcomer, even if you are an orc.

Go to Daggerfall, NPCs call you outsider, even if you are a Breton.

Go to Murkmire, NPCs call you Ojel, even if you are an Argonian.

Go to Summerset, NPCs call you Nebarra , even if you are an Altmer.

Go to Vvardenfell, NPCs call you N'wah, even if you are a Dunmer.

Since our backstory and background's already decided for us, where am I from ZOS?

There are some notable exceptions to this. Orsiniums main story when playing as an Orc offers a really cool option on one of its quests followed by some excellent dialogue with the King.

    Favorite Foods and Potions

    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

Your character is wherever you want them to be from. The game is going to assume you're whoever the story demands you are because that's how games go.

That doesn't, however, mean your head-cannon has to go that way.

I think that depends on if you've started the main quest or not? It's been a while, but don't you die, become the Vestige, etc as a part of the main quest line starting? Before this you're just some unlucky idiot who is literally the only person in the entire region who can solve EVERYONE'S problems.*

*Note: ATM I'm blasting through the Alliance questlines for one on my toons (was originally speedrunning Cadwell's Silver for the Soul Shriven motif for my main who'd given it to my crafter when she'd completed the quest) and the number of people hailing me to help them that I just ignore because they're not a main quest marker is VERY funny. Sorry mate, I'm sure someone else will be along soon to help!

When you talk to the contact on the ship you are coshed unconcious and only then dragged off to be sacrificed as per the cutscene. If you never talk to the contact you keep your soul and a whole load of the game continuity goes out of the window as some of the quests run on the presumption you have no soul.

And that is why we should get to choose a "background" upon character creation that's purely RP focused, just to settle these things. Also that helps new players get immediately exposed to the lore of the world as soon as they start out and might help them find their place in it.
It's been a while since ZOS has done something for the RP community. Housing arguably damaged it by removing RP from the public eye, stopping people from randomly running into each other and bonding over spontaneous RP, thus stunting RP guild growth.

I play all mine that way, no matter what race. Their backstories generally have them originating in hamlets/villages/towns/cities from the older single-player games, none of which are in ESO (yet). I have one Redguard whose family was Samaran prior to the Ra Gada; another Redguard from Hegathe, one from a small village I made up when writing fanfic while playing Skyrim, and one from Taneth. And so on, for all my characters.

So yes, all my characters are "from away". In other words, outsiders.

What if Nirn is in fact an another daedric realm, a realm of Lorkhan? And as such is in fact a one great Arena where other daedric forces playing game for their amusement? And you, as a player, is a being called from outside of their worlds and according to nature of the Elder Scrolls out of the time, to participate in this daedric game? Maybe you are from our world and your body, the race & sex, are merely a vessel chosen for your game that was formed for the first time in the vaults of Balfiera? That is why you are an outsider everywhere you go and you will always be reminded about this fact... You are simply out of Nirn ;)

It is evident that NPC's don't see the Player Character as the Player sees them. It's not just the PC's race that the NPC's can't see it is everything - dress, skin, cosmetics, polymorph, etc. It is a Player's choice how they want to account for that (or not). This is one of the great opportunities for narrative role play that the game gives us.

in summerset they do recognize u as high elf not just in main quest but also some side quest, it is very cool
in Orsiniums main story apparently there is specific dialog for orc players.

u know that is problem, features removed from the game but u still have to pay 40 for pre order and 25 for sale same as summerset but the quality of content dropped specially after elsweyr.

people need to speak up or vote with wallet, do not pre-oder anymore, buy the chapter when it goes on sale and send message to ZOS we want summerset quality of content back.

I like that the game leaves it ambiguous because it lets me choose, including choosing some fairly complicated things where a character moved around a lot while growing up. But I agree it is weird when they're not recognised by anyone anywhere.

I can't think of a way to solve that problem however without making it restrictive and weird in other ways. Having you pick a location would be better than being assigned one automatically, but if it affected the dialogue it would probably still make a lot of assumptions about how long they'd lived there, what they were like before etc. Ideally it would be different for each race, for example a human adult wouldn't take about having known an elf since they were a baby, but I doubt it would be that detailed.

Two of my characters are from villages that don't exist any more (one was in Cyrodiil, one in Elseweyr). Both haven't been back to the area they grew up in years and don't intend to ever go back.

In other cases I explain it as they've moved around a lot and haven't stayed in one place long enough for people to get to know them, or they're from a big city and the handful of NPCs you meet just aren't people they knew before.
