So, with the Witch Event providing XP, I wanna make a tank. I have a DPS and a kick butt healer. But now I want a tank.
I wanna know which class I should use for a tank.

DK has built in tanking 'must have' abilities.

All classes are viable, but you will have a much easier time playing DK (IMO)

Having a really great time tanking as a Warden. Great self heals, a solid 10% damage reduction from aoes + speed buff in a single skill, & a cost-free purge with the netch.

DKs are the "best" tank in that they have the best baked in toolkit for the job and are the best for beginners, but I think it does also come down to what class you enjoy playing too.

Necro by far. It's much easier to tank on a Necro in both PvE and PvP compared to other classes. Dk has a bunch of outdated passives. Necro provides much better buffs to teammates and debuffs to enemies than a dk could. For one example Minor Vulnerability and Minor Protection from one skill. Also Necro has better Ult Regen and Mitigation than any other class along with a basically free purify.
One could argue that healing is better on a Necro also considering hungry scythe gives a major burst heal with an added heal over time based on enemies hit and your max health. Necrotic potency will also give a heal over time along with Ult per corpse. Necro also doesn't have to slot Silver Leash since their armor buff automatically pulls enemies for you. The Bone Tyrant passives alone are better than anything a DK has minus Helping Hands.

I used to run around with an in-game friend that had a predilection for tanking, thus he had several tank characters.
His DK Tank was amazing, but my favorite was his Necro Tank.
That Necro was unkillable, even did some damage, not to mention that for really hard content he used to slot one of the Reanimate morph ultimates that brought the entire team back to life and ready to fight when we got our 45535 kicked by some boss :)

I only tank dungeons. And from my own experience I will say that the necromancer makes all other tanks completely useless. Best mitigation, low-cost healing, major + minor vulnerability + Saxhleel Champion.

It's very group and experience specific IMHO

DK tank is fairly simple to play (except for dealing with heals when first playing solo) and generally brings a useful set of basic buffs, chain pull and the like. It's also to my mind less flexible than some of the others.

Warden has a very strong toolkit for tanking, self and group heals and buffs/debuffs but does require a lot more button mashing to keep them all up and initially lacks a proper pull

Templars make awesome tanks for low level groups because of the AoE taunt and the strong heals. It's very easy to run a 3DD and templar heal/tank. It's also very handy at low levels for grinding transmute crystals because you can put jabs and sword/shield on the same bar so tank and DPS and heal when you get newbies or sometimes just the totally clueless in a PUG group. For end content maybe less useful.

Necro is boring. You stack 80k plus health, you stand there holding block whilst the healer throws shards at you and that's about it for dungeons. (Yeah I know you can do lots more with necro-tanks especially for end game hard content 8))

Still figuring out sorc and nb tanks.

I don't think there is a "best", all the classes have good tanking capabilities, and so many of your abilities that you'll be using are non-class specific anyways, so basically, just pick the class that you are interested in it and go with it.

Personally, I main a Necromancer tank, and it is my favorite build that I have. I love my Necromancer tank, I think Necros make awesome tanks.

I am also partial to Warden tanks, as I run a Warden tank as well.

I've been interested in Sorc and Nightblade tanks as well, but I've never had any interest in Dragon Knights or Templars.

Have you used GF to get a random dungeon group? I have seen players stay where they are, DPSing the boss, even though the boss just telegraphed they were going to kill everyone in that area. What is even more hilarious is when they are rezzed and dye to the same telegraphed attack.

It's hard to pinpoint a "best" class (for anything) outside of a specific usage case. There's a reason why nightblade tanks became meta back when Sunspire came out, for example. Every class brings something unique and whether something turns out to be best will largely depend on what group composition you want to go with.

For example, if you have no sorcerers in your group then a sorcerer tank might be ideal for Crystal Weapon+Exploitation (Minor Prophecy) among other things it can bring. Dragonknight has Stone Giant (but in some content it's just not possible or feasible to run it or get 100% uptime on three stacks), along with Igenous Weapons if your gorup wants to run Heroism potions, and in some cases Engulfing Flames can still be nice on a tank, especially if running Elemental Catalyst. Necromancer tanks obviously have Colossus+Saxhleel at the moment, along with bonuses to DoT mitigation (very nice in Rockgrove against Bahsei), Ghost, etc.

"Best" will depend on circumstance, content, group composition, and what you're familiar with or comfortable with.

DK is generally considered by far the "easiest" to tank on generally because of sustain on ultimate use, survivability, and certain passives that increase resistances and block mitigation. I say this having been a templar tank for the first year I was active in the game, and got laughed at when saying I wanted to tank vMoL and got told "it's impossible" because we didn't have chains back then. Or being told that Ruins of Mazzatun was impossible because of the same (I used Javiline to interrupt the stoneshapers back then, since we didn't have chains; it amounted to the same thing, but of course the would take longer to get to the group and die as opposed to being instantly chained->interrupted->pulled into DPS->burned down). I then made a DK because I wanted to progress and most other options simply weren't viable at the time. My DK is my main, but if I were able to class change, I would do so in a heartbeat.
So, with the Witch Event providing XP, I wanna make a tank. I have a DPS and a kick butt healer. But now I want a tank.

Do you have a group or are you considering a group? How familiar are you to tanking (either in ESO or any other game)? What level of tanking do you want to get into or see yourself getting into? Do you want to be a support tank or a meat shield? Or are you looking more for casual not-so-serious tanking or end game trial hard modes?

If that's what you're used to, go for it. Necromancer tanks are in a great place at the moment so far as support tanks go, with Colossus+Saxhleel's Champion. Who knows how long that will last, though? But if I could swap my DK main to necro, I absolutely would. (Given that I have a full complement of tanks for every class, the only thing I would actually benefit from by turning my main would be achievement points).

I chose DK since he was my first tank but I can honestly say in my opinion almost any class can tank just as good with the right gear and set up. I have a tank for every class and I tank primarily vet dlc dungeons and HMs. Here are my thoughts…

Dragon Knight - My go to for serious content. Class is basically built for tanking in my opinion. Built in chains and magma armor are a clear win. I have a set of armor for every scenario. My most versatile tank.

Necromancer - My “PuG carrier”. Necro’s are great tanks. Plenty of self heals, chains built into the armor skill. A very good ultimate to help with de-buffing the boss. And another ultimate to pick up your group when they wipe. Especially helpful in pugs as I stated earlier. Vet Castle Thorn, Fanglair, and Depths of Malatar are a few pug unfriendly dungeons that have been saved by the resurrection ultimate.

Nightblade - My 3rd favorite tank. But it’s more of a vampire blood themed RP tank. Stage 4 vampire at all times, but I hardly notice the skill ability cost increase. With Crimson Twlight, Leeching, and Lady Thorn 2 piece (or another health draining 2 piece set), I’m near unkillable especially if there are a ton off adds. Barely have to use my heal at all. I use the vampire ultimate as the “I win button”, but sadly the class it’s self is lacking in one. Only down side I have is lack of a ranged pull ability built in to the class.

Wardens - I have 3 warden tanks. (One uses ice staves on both bars and is mostly ice themed and the 2nd one is my werewolf themed tank). Great tanking class. Great group buffs. Good heals. Built in pull ability, what’s not to love. Sadly it’s lacking an “I win button” skill but that’s not that big of a deal for Wardens.

I have a Templar and Sorc tanks as well but they aren’t my favorite class’s to play tanks with. Not saying their bad, just not my cup of tea.

However Necro is the next best thing, if not slightly better in some instances.

In short, DK is best for Tanking yet Necro is a great alternative and my groups have had a satisfactory tanking experience with both classes.

He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

The real difficulty is defining what we mean by “best tank.”

People try to accomplish different goals with their “tank.” Some are after buffing. Others want to tank and heal their group. Others simply want to be unkillable. And yet others want crowd control. What you want from your tank will largely control your answer.

However, I would assert that if we would distinguish the actual task of tanking from these other extra things that we are trying to do, then we would begin to veer towards the dragon knight.

The dragon knight is the best at tanking. It might not be the best at what you want your tank to do.
