Companions?

I disagree, it makes much more sense to ally up with the NPCs that actually matter in the storyline rather than random characters deciding to join you for life. Also, as you've said, you get many interesting choices, Lyranth etcetera.

It's New Life and Mirri is being a party pooper, again. She refuses to take part in any of the games. I'd like to dress her up as a grotto pixie to compliment my character's Santa costume, but she won't even wear the hat.

Well, if she wants to behave like a moody teenager, then fine. Mirri is grounded for the duration of the event.

out of topic but how did you give her the Telvanni equipment?

That's the "house guest" version of Mirri. It's the costume she's dressed in.
