Can I still use CDs for install

I have the game discs from the day one release, if I use and install it will it reduce the download size? or it would mess up my setup progress? I heard horror stories about this on Google so that is why I did avoid my Steam copy and use retail version instead, I'm currently at the 40xxxxxxx in progress bar I still have LOT to download, so should I use my discs or continue downloading a clean copy?

I don't think it will help.

I got the game a year after it was released and happened to be sent a pre-release copy (with the pre-order bonuses). I installed it from the disc and then had an 'update' which took about as long as the initial install, and that was after just 1 year of updates.

Since then there's been at least once when we all had to re-download the entire game because they changed the file size or something which made it smaller, so I doubt what's on the disc bears any resemblance to the current version of the game and would all be over-written anyway.

Just pull down a clean copy.

There was a full rework of the install data back in 2019, so you'll need to download all of it anyway. Not sure what happens if you try to install from the disk, but it probably wouldn't help.

I would say, don't get a Steam copy, if you've got the retail disk, just pull down a fresh installer from the website. There have been issues with Steam's authentication servers going down in the past, locking Steam users out of the game. But, the choice is yours.

I believe the CDs will only install the launcher (if they do anything now) which will then download the game. Personally, I would download from the website as that will install the current launcher and guarantee you're installing the full game as it is today - which obviously bears no relation to the original game client which we all had to replace a while back anyway.

Thank you all, I indeed decided to continue downloading a clean copy, which down to 34xxxxxx I think this night and early morning it will be completed. I noticed sometimes it throws random errors as well like missing something, hopefully it will not the case this time.

I have one more question: Can I still get the companions even if I do not own the Blackwood expansion?

Maybe in a year when Blackwood becomes a DLC with ESO Plus, but for now companions are a blackwood exclusive.

After the redone there is no point

No, they come as rewards for completing certain quests in Blackwood.

I recall having to re-download the game somewhere between Tamriel Unlimited and One Tamriel, when you had one game for PC-NA and one for PC-EU. After the megaserver selection was put in-game, I had to download the full game again, because I was playing on PC-EU and I had to wait a day or so to return to the game. I think I still have the PC-EU version of ESO somewhere on my old PC, but that one only let's me be on the main menu.

You will still have to redownload everything, as the whole bulid was 'changed' in 2019!
