How does the Maelstrom Arena Staff work?

Obviously everyone uses it on the back bar and casts wall from there...but how does it work...from the point of where it is cast (ie. backbar) and the effect carries over to to the frontbar...what if say you cast wall from the backbar with a set staff and have maelstrom on the frontbar, would the effect kick in (even though you didn't use the staff to cast wall)? Thanks in advance for the info.

Weapon sets upgrade the abilities cast so even if you bar swap the ability running still receives the upgrade. Why back barring the Maelstrom staff has the damage boost carry over onto the front bar.

thx...so it wouldn't kick in if I had a Maelstrom on the frontbar and casted wall on the backbar (with a different staff), right?

Correct, the set has to be active for the ability to receive the upgrade. So like a Maelstrom Inferno back bar with a Masters ice staff front bar next patch is going to be interesting. Back bar has Wall of Elements and the front bar with Frost Reach as the spammable.
