I guess if you didn't play UO then you wouldn't have the nostalgia. So I understand why many players do not like the orb.

Like a real compass, it has an arrow that always points North.

Yup the compass needle always points north. It’s a bit more difficult to see on the other mounts (we still need first person perspective while riding mounts) but it’s very clear on the dwarven spider.
Over personally found it useful in new zones and Cyrodiil when trying to reorient myself. In Cyrodiil when traveling between keeps and there are obstacles in the way you can easily get back on your path without glancing at the top of the screen.1 -
