Besides, when you're scrolling the chat box, a lengthy message will scroll on and off screen as a single block, rather than one line at a time, so that kind of helps you scroll past a lengthy message more easily to see the things you're more interested in.
Having a global chat would really help for this matter. Like everyone online can see it and every player can type but that might look like a stream chat where thousands of people typing at the same time.

I've played other games that had a global chat channel. Sometimes it is cluttered up, most times it does what it is there for. The global channel could have additional rules to it so it isn't used for a back and forth discussion. Something like a 1 min cooldown before an individual can post again.
I'd just like the ability join/leave text chats. I never care about zone chat, but I'm forced to endure it if I want to see valuable guild chat.

You can make multiple tabs and show what you want on them. There is a cog icon in the right corner of the chat box that allows you to check boxes for what you want to see or not.
Changing text colours via the Social panel can also be very helpful for making not so important chatter a not so important colour.

Console player, huh? On PC you can create new chat tabs and select which kind of messages is displayed in every tab (it's base game functionality, no addons required), screenshot in spoiler:
Tfw multiple MMO's already solved this extremely archaic issue by having completely separate chats for recruitment/trade.

This is what has always puzzled me. People spamming guild recruitment have to know most will only see the bottom of the message and not the name of the guild yet they post the long messages anyway.
