Chat already has a limit to the characters you can use.

Players would just make multiple posts to say the same things they're posting now. There might be a gap between posts, where other players posted stuff while someone continued typing a lengthy message, but players posting ads would likely just have the parts of their messages stored on multiple clipboard pages or whatever so they could quickly paste them one after the other to keep the entire message together.

Besides, when you're scrolling the chat box, a lengthy message will scroll on and off screen as a single block, rather than one line at a time, so that kind of helps you scroll past a lengthy message more easily to see the things you're more interested in.

It would be nice if ZOS made a game wide chat for selling gear, runs etc. Then people could have that chat in a separate window or turn it off when not needed.

This is what has always puzzled me. People spamming guild recruitment have to know most will only see the bottom of the message and not the name of the guild yet they post the long messages anyway.

Having a global chat would really help for this matter. Like everyone online can see it and every player can type but that might look like a stream chat where thousands of people typing at the same time.

I've played other games that had a global chat channel. Sometimes it is cluttered up, most times it does what it is there for. The global channel could have additional rules to it so it isn't used for a back and forth discussion. Something like a 1 min cooldown before an individual can post again.

Make posts to the global channel cost gold.

Kill 2 birds with one stone. Adds an extra gold sink to the game as well.

I'd just like the ability join/leave text chats. I never care about zone chat, but I'm forced to endure it if I want to see valuable guild chat.

Console player, huh? On PC you can create new chat tabs and select which kind of messages is displayed in every tab (it's base game functionality, no addons required), screenshot in spoiler:

You can make multiple tabs and show what you want on them. There is a cog icon in the right corner of the chat box that allows you to check boxes for what you want to see or not.

Changing text colours via the Social panel can also be very helpful for making not so important chatter a not so important colour.

The first option does not exist on console.

    The second one does.

People would still post in normal chat because they would find more potential buyers.

Tfw multiple MMO's already solved this extremely archaic issue by having completely separate chats for recruitment/trade.

@ZOS_MattFiror Is there a reason we can't have this on consoles?

why would a seller post there and reach much fewer possible buyers?

Yes, except that they still don't get used that way.

Other MMO I play I have to constantly deal with watching toxic banter back and forth for 15 min at a time in the regular window because people insist on just dumping everything there since more people see it, and then inevitable arguing ensues between people not wanting to see it and telling the OP to use the other channel which just leads to more fighting.

Can't control where people post, even when you want to. So I prefer the ability to turn off and on what I want to see in the tab, and live in peace myself, lol.

and now with the info about the guild posted elsewhere, all they need to do is: LFM (put guild link here)
