ANY account you have can theoretically be hacked, including an ESO one. It's why everyone suggests having different passwords for all your accounts instead of using the same one, or variations of the same one. I've heard a few things over the years of people getting hacked, though it likely happens more than we hear about around here since a majority of players don't use the forums.
That being said I also wouldn't worry too much about it. Don't share your password with people, don't click on fishy links or whatever, don't go around gloating about how much rare stuff/gold you have if you have a bunch of valuable things, and no one should really have any reason to specifically try to get into your account. And even if someone correctly guesses your password or gets ahold of it some other way, they'd need to get into your email as well since when you log on from a new IP for the first time, you have to register the device, and you can't do that without a code that gets emailed to you.

Yes, it's happened. Make sure your account is tied to a secure email that isn't compromised, make sure your email and your game login have distinct passwords. Practice save browsing behavior. And, you should be fine.
If your account is hacked, it will be banned, and you will not get it back. Take your account security seriously.
Generally its good to have 3 emails: 1 for public use where you're okay all the spam goes or social media; 2 for private use such as financials and sensitive information; and 3 a game email only used for game attachments like Steam, Blizzard, or Origin. I have never received spam on either of my private email or game email except from the stuff they are attached. The public email on the other hand is a dumpster fire, but that's okay its serving its purpose.
Yes, it can be hacked; as with most hacks the weakest link in the chain is the human involved.
Personally I would much rather have a 2FA system more akin to what Steam or Blizzard uses, with an 'offline' generator but the email is all we have so... make sure that facility is enabled in your account.
Either way as it has been mentioned before on the thread unique passwords of a certain complexity are must these days.
Personally I have taken the easiest route to this and use a password manager, there is no way I can remember 100s of complex passwords. I can however remember a single complex password and change it monthly. is not perfect, but is as far as my limited intellect can take me.
I also use a unique email address for each of my ESO accounts that is not used for anything else. This minimises the chance of getting 'phished'.
Finally never, ever share your password with anyone. At the very least this gives people an indication of how you choose your passwords. That is no bueno.
This pretty much plugs most low skill attacks. Remember, you only need to 'stand on stupid' once for things to go south and the most likely point of entry is you.
EDIT: Also look after the 'health' of the computer that you are using (in consoles this is less likely because 'hanging' extraneous code is not that simple); no amount of good practices will protect you if the host computer itself is compromised.
EDIT2: One thing ZOS could do to increase security is 'unlink' the IGN from the account login; this being an MMO everyone you interact with - may it be in game, or maybe on discords where people are encouraged to change their 'handle' to their IGN 'to make things easier' etc - will inevitably know what your account login is. Personally in this day and age I don't think that's particularly great.
Yes, definitely. Especially since half of your login information (User ID) is shown to everybody on the server.
So you better make up some fort knox password and multi-factor authentication.
Then it will at least mail you and ask for confirmation if somebody tries to log in from a new geographic location.
The best techniques are passed on by the survivors.
Yes, account hacking happens in ESO like everywhere.
However, I consider the level of security implemented by ZOS (at least on PC, not sure about consoles) as being reasonably safe (requiring email confirmation with every new device connecting + on regular intervals).
To be honest, the few cases I've encountered of players' accounts being hacked were due to people having shared accounts and passwords with untrustworthy others in order to get achievements done or gear farmed (mostly solo arenas such as Maelstroem).
Yes it happens. And it happened to me just 2 months ago. The hacker got access through my unused Steam account. Took me almost a month to get it back. A 2 Way Authetication woult be much appreciated.
