Text/In Game Shorthanding...

So really, do players NOT know any of the shorthand used while "texting" in game anymore??

Reason I'm asking is, I was ISO Active Free/No Fee Guild in early AM, Free Crafting Assistance, Free Noob Assistance, Active In Game Chat Channel. Whisper/Invite me.....

Instead, I kept getting people begging to JOIN my Guild!

Really, does no one know what ISO means????

Or how about:

WTT
WTB
WTS
LF
WM
FN

or the multitude of others.....

Come on, this is OLD stuff folks....

I love the shorthand in Craglorn zone chat - “dps lfg ncr” it sounds like the old singles ads in magazines/papers (I’m old). Yes, lonely people used to advertise for dates, as Tinder hadn’t been born yet.

Um. I don't do text-speak. No clue what ISO means, and not interested in looking it up. WTT, WTB, WTS, LF - yeah, because this isn't my first MMO. WM, FN? Again, no clue.

In any case, I don't have chat panel open, and don't talk to anyone in game anyway.

I dont either.... from what you posted, only WTT/WTB/WTS/LF are the ones I know. Although from your context I can now see it means "in search of".

People keep coming up with new abbreviations, and expect other players to know them. And keep in mind, not everyone's native language is english, mine isn't either. I have to google it every time, when players use abbreviations for skills or dungeons on the forums.

Nowadays everything has abbreviations, and it is driving me insane. Jobs have them, companies have them, schools have them, the internet has them, chat has them, texting has them, games have them, and people use some in speech. And many are the same for multiple of those. There is no way to keep up.

Okay. But why would you use "ISO = in search of" instead of the far more common (to me at least) "LF = looking for" in your above example?

When I played WoW and RIFT, I never heard of ISO, WM or FN. Mostly people in those games used LF, PST w info, etc. - and nobody asked for ferry/taxi. Maybe they do now, I don't know, haven't played WoW since 2013, RIFT since 2016.

Not to mention the one on the forum.

I've been gaming since 1983, online since 1997, and while I know the basic acronyms that most posters here recognise, the rest are a mystery to me but one that I won't lose any sleep over as, like Sylvermynx, I don't deal with that language or enable zone chat.

I don't play on console but on PC the key is G to open all guild related UI. You can look at your controller binds in settings to find it or someone on PS can comment.

ISO is far less common to use. Most use the LF.

I know just about all on the list except FN. Never seen anyone use that one. Most just ask for a teleport or browse the guild roster for one.

I can see some people not knowing some of these. They're more short hand for people used to texting than anything else.

It's under Social on our menu. Social > Guild. There will be an option to search for one if you don't have. You can also find the guild listing boards at the Reach and Blackwood cities. I do not know if other zones have them as I honestly haven't looked. We console players don't have the luxury of key binds. Everything is preset or bust.

I wonder if this is a difference in culture. Just because I've mostly always "lived" on US servers in the MMOs I've played doesn't mean that's the "norm".

My Aussie friends from WoW had a lot of things I didn't natively understand - I had to ask for referents. I didn't play outside of US server in RIFT. In ESO, I play on both PC NA and PC EU - but since I'm at this point basically a hermit, I don't interact with anyone much (a couple of RL friends) on either server. And I don't use text messaging (eh, yes - I have a cell phone but it doesn't work here at home, so it's mostly an emergency device while we're on the road - 80 mile round trip to the "closest" town, 140 mile round trip to the "not so close" town).

So perhaps my attitude is very narrow. In which case, I'm sorry for any offense given.

ISO = International Standards Organisation, though now they've gone European they're actually called the International Organization for Standardization while retaining the initials in the now-wrong order. If you're lysdexic like me, you can also easily confuse the ISO for OSI (Open Systems Interconnection).

Kind of exemplifies the issues with everyone wanting to abbreviate and acronym-ate everything. Type ~words~ already, then there's fairly clear communication. It's even more confusing when people use lower case to initialise things; "wtf" and "WTF" are not the same thing. The former is a word missing some letters, the latter is shorthand for "Whisky Tango Foxtrot".
Even on the internet, clear communication is important; it can be the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse"; the difference between "knowing your s***" and "knowing you're s***".

On a glance I would have seen it as "ISO-Active". A guild in support of all those ISOlated folks that can play in the early morning due to quarantine? Or maybe some fancy new kind of ERP?

As for the standards organisation, the "international standards organisation" thing is a retcon. The founders agreed on ISO (from greek Isos=equal) as shorthand of the organisation and start of each standard-number to make that independent from languages, especially since the seat of the organisation is and always has been in Geneva in french-speaking Switzerland, and always had French and English as working languages.
