How do new players follow the Story?

Just curious as I haven’t played the story in many many years. And when I did you had to progress through each Zone and the quest somewhat guided you through! Plus if you left a zone to early you were to weak to kill a fly!

For new players with the One T update how does anyone follow the story and have it make any sense?

I am asking because with the new update for Xbox I’d like to maybe play through the entire story again.

The only way new players have to follow the story is to research it online, unfortunately.

There are, however, multiple threads on the forum discussing ways that Zos could make it clearer for new players to do the content in the correct order.

Once you are in a zone, ZOS has a Zone Story Guide that lists the major quests in the zone. However, ZOS does not guide players through the story arcs in any particular order, so its possible to play the AD questline backwards, even though it'll make no sense.

I have never understood why new players are thrown into the latest expansion. The story broadly functions chronologically, at least in terms of the characters you meet and the order in which you meet them. The game does not fit a play-in-any-order ethos- it simply wasn't designed that way until ZOS decided to just ignore any actual coherence in story-telling and push people to play out of order.

there is a zone guide in group section. It's a very good tool and will let you follow the main story.

Blackwood's new tutorial was supposed to give them the option to start with the base game's main story and zone stories so they could do everything in order, but unfortunately it missed the mark somewhat so the answer is still that they'll have to look it up online to find out where to go and what order to play things.

The new tutorial isn't tied to any specific storyline and gives you a choice of where to go after you've finished, including starting on your alliance's starter island. Unfortunately what that does is place you where you would end up after leaving The Wailing Prison, which means a new player is likely to do the starter islands (some of which make reference to your character not having a soul) then when they reach their alliance's main city they'll meet the Hooded Figure and pick up the main quest, which drops them back on the island and tells them to talk to people nearby but gives no further direction. If they're lucky they'll remember which city they were in and know how to get there, so they can continue the story with only that first section out of order.

If not they'll have to do things in whatever order they come across and probably put it down to this being yet another MMO where the writing was at best an after thought and the game is really all about levels and grinding items.

It's a good tool for checking off the major quests in the zone you're currently in. It's no help at all for finding out which zone to start in or where to go next once you've completed one.
