In a group, the game would prefer you to be with other players. Quite frankly, your better off with players in the group. So it will despawn companions as you approach 4 players. So if there are two of you with a companion, a third joins, one of you lose your companion.

At least they come back automatically after the group disbands.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

When the companions were new a couple weeks ago, my guild grouped up four of us for overland stuff (not group dungeon) and we all lost our companions. So we tried with two and each of the two could have a companion. We were not happy and simply ungrouped so all of us could have our companions out. As a healer, it was not fun trying to keep track of my ungrouped group. The lesson we took from that session was not to join any group over two until this gets sorted out.

If 12 entities can group up for a (very graphically intensive) trial, why can't 12 (6 players + 6 companions) group up for overland work?

If the game prefers I group with other players instead of my companion for overland work, I'll simply run solo.

I think it is because the game has an easier time keeping track of the players actions rather than the scripting of a bunch of companions.

It's listed in the patch notes as a bug under "Known Issues"

But in overworld, the group limit is 12, so if we're playing with 3 friends, why shouldn't we be able to bring our companions along?

We tested this the other day, we can take a group of 6 players + 6 companions into a trial, but we can't do this at a world boss.

But as I said above, it's a bug and will be fixed (hopefully soon!)

The way I interpreted companion usage in groups is that they are filler intended to help undersized groups reach their full count. This means depending on group size not all players will be able to use their companion.

    Patch notes:
    Companions
You are not currently able to summon Companions into groups that have 4 or more players + Companions present while in the overland or in public dungeons. This means a group of 2 players can each have a Companion, a group of 3 players can only have 1 total Companion and groups of 4 or more will not be able to have any Companions in these areas.

Overworld limit is 12 not 4
I should have been able to do a 3+3
