Why not climbing?

Hi,

Why not introduce in the game, the climbing system? When jump and fall, so you just catch the border and climb. Like Assassin Creed?

Because invisible borders everywhere, there's nowhere to climb really. If you're meaning getting through small obstacles or getting on roofs and such it would be nice and all but most surfaces aren't fit for that kind of thing making you slide from them making it possible with only a total game overhaul (now what zos prefers to do). Also there's almost no point in that mechanics really, it's not assassin's creed nor thief series.

Grappling hook would be nice. Or acrobatic from Oblivion. This one has fond memories of the boots of Springheel Jak https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Boots_of_Springheel_Jak

It would be cool, but it would require a lot of changes. As @colossalvoids said currently a lot of areas are blocked off by invisible walls and a lot of surfaces which in theory you should be able to stand on you'll instead slide off as if it's made of ice, including roofs. Theres several roofs you can already get onto, one of the easiest being the stable block in Daggerfall that's below the blacksmithing and woodworking area. You can just drop down onto the roof but then you'll slide onto the floor even though it's no steeper than a lot of hillsides.

So they'd have to rework that as well as designating areas which can be climbed (I doubt they'd let you climb everything) and if they don't want it to be largely pointless for a lot of players they'd also need to put in things to find or places to access so there's a reason to do it.

I suspect it's one of those things which ideally needs to be decided early in the game's development, so the world can be built with climbing in mind.

I would love this - similar to the climbing and grappling in Dragon’s Dogma… but I think it would require an entirely new engine and would pretty dramatically change the game. Here’s hoping they add it for ESO 2!

Climbing, underwater content, flying, all have been asked before. Think they said it would be too much of a rework to do. But never say never.

I wouldn't count on too much. I would be satisfied if for example a small branch lying on the path or a pebble didn't require me to jump, and I would be extremly happy if the obstacles reaching the knees of our character weren't insurmountable obstacles. Something like climbing in Assasins Creed or Shadow of Mordor/War I think we can forget about, it would require rebuilding absolutely all locations in the game.

Yes.. the underwater content, I think climbing is much dificult to make that underwater content., And flying similar to underwater.

I may think that they dont want it, or didnt do that, bcz I dont know if U find similitudes but TESO is very similar made as Age of Conan, with invisible walls, and limited areas.. even loading zones., So if it is the same way, there wont be any undrrwater and flying, bcz of the cuts and limitations of space. It is not unlimited mmo like, PW or L2, or Black desert

But they already can do something, they can put everywheare special point, like in dragon quests, so U can catch it with the tool

The invisible obstacles are better than the alternative. The alternative being a big ole wall you can see with nothing on the other side. The obstacles are in place because there is nothing past those points. They give the illusion that something is beyond but there isn't.
Some of the barriers are located poorly though. I've found a couple jumping down a cliff that happen part way down. When you hit it you are stuck because you can't climb back up (to steep) and can't get past the obstacle going down.

I find underwater swimming more likely than an all new climbing mobility system

but I think that ESO could implement more "Thief Pathways" in cities like they do in Thieves Guild DLC

There are many areas with invisible walls where there is something on the other side such as outcroppings you are forced to go around rather than over. It wasn't so bad in the older content but the invisible walls are showing up more and more in the type of terrain player use to be able to traverse. The only rationale for doing this is artwork takes less time and costs less than making the area hardscape that can be traversed.

I know what you mean. You mean getting unto a box by jumping and grabbing the edge and lifting up. I'd love that. Trying to jump up on things is really frustrating. The pile of logs in vivec bank area is a good example of how frustrating it is.

I just watched a trailer of a mmo which will be releasing in a month.. they can fly, climb, swimm, complately open world without loadings., In october there will be new realeses too..

TESO will have big competency, if they dont stop sticky developments and start with huge changes in the world.. it will damage them alot

Personally I like TESO enviroment, so I want it be the best and have everything others have and more

After playing Assassin's Creed and Breath of the Wild, it really does feel unimmersive that you cannot climb anything anywhere, you basically cannot interact with your environment. It's actually as bad as needing to jump in order to go up a gentle step in front of you, or being stuck by pebbles and invisible steps.

The reason they do this is because 1) it's easier to design and code flat zones, and 2) this can naturally limit player movement and define path or zone borders. For example, a zone feels bigger if have to walk around mountains and it's more natural to imagine that you can't go to another zone because a mountain range is blocking your way vs an invisible wall.

The game was designed with limited vertical movement. Adding that in, too the entire map, would be a large undertaking. And then you can look at things that have been added post launch (namely group finder) and pair that with the current ground based obstacles, dismounts and general terrain shenanigans.....well, doesn't paint a pretty picture for me.

Yeah that is what I was getting at. You see something but it really isn't there. That beats a wall with nothing to see behind it. Somewhere the zone has to end. Without the barriers we could have ourselves out in the wilderness with absolutely nothing to do. Can't make all the zones surrounded by ocean so the barriers does the job.

That's not going to happen. Cyrodiil, the largest and most populated open world zone in ESO, does not perform well and ZOS apparently cannot fix it. If that damages them with the competition, so be it. ZOS deserves it. But don't act like ZOS can suddenly change their whole game to fit your whim or better match their competition. They cannot, not and have it work well.

I appreciate your intent that ESO should beg, borrow, and steal features from the games you like, but frankly, grafting those features onto ESO zones that aren't well designed for them isn't going to be effective or enjoyable.

First and foremost, ESO needs to continue doing what they do already and make sure they do that well. Fix performance in existing zones for a start. Then, as they add new features, they need to make sure they are well integrated into the existing game, rather than creating a Frankenstein's monster of features stitched together from their competition. Climbing, flying, and swimming mean very little if there's nothing to do with it in the vast majority of base game and DLC zones, or if it breaks existing quests.

Yep, you can climb a lot of things if you have time. Not sure about the Red Mountain now though, the new house may have messed with the walkable route.
