Is there any difference between companion weapon types?

As far as we see in menus, there's no functional difference between an axe, mace, or sword, or battleaxe, maul, or greatsword. They function the same.
I suppose the destruction staves have different elemental damage... but that's it.
am I wrong on this is there passives that are different for companion weapons?

You can even change the appearance to whatever 1h weapon you like it doesn't have to be what you equipped.

As far as I can tell from my experimentation there’s no difference other than the skills that are activated by what you equip and, of ccourse, the trait.

Both Companions (so far) are capable of tanking, healing, and dealing damage. Armour and weapons seem to be simply a means to open up a specific skill or skill line relative to the task you want them to perform.

To be honest, I like it this way. Not too much faffing about and very easy respecs.

Yeah there's a difference between say resto staff and 1h/shield, but there's no difference between a greatsword and a maul as far as I can tell.

The different destruction staves have different effects on the first skill in the tree - inferno is a knockback, lightning is aoe damage, I forget what ice does. It's the skill that's analogous to destructive clench.
