To avoid being more spoilerish, I'll say:

- I had trouble picking it up, having to log in and out twice before it would let me. The second time, I'd logged into a different character before going back to the questing one.
- The one possibly unusual thing I did to perhaps set the problem off was, upon first seeing the chicken, summon the pet that looks just like it.
