Companion armor skill lines do not level.

Okay then, medium armor on Bastian is bugged and levelling in spite of not fulfilling requirements.

Off topic, whose bright idea what it for it to only be possible to level one armor type at the time?

You need to wear 5 of a particular type to level them.

Bastian comes with 7 medium armor pieces equipped. That may account for why he leveled that weight a bit but not the others. Unless he is still somehow leveling medium without 5 pieces equipped...

As to why companions require 5 at a time to level when they only require 3 to unlock the lines and players only require 3 to unlock and 1 to level, and as to why the devs failed to mention that in the patch notes but only buried it in the Help/Tutorial menu (which they also don’t signal to players in game), your guesses are as good as mine.

How to level a skill line, both for players and companions, is also displayed in the tooltip that pops up when you hover over the skill line progress bar. That only goes for PC/Mac of course, no idea how it is on consoles.

Ok so they can't even gain skill without 5 of a type?

Basically no reason to wear different weights at all then, unless you just happen to have some good gear for that slot.

They do have passives based on how many pieces they're wearing. Each piece of light increases healing and reduces the cooldown of break free. Each piece of medium increases damage and reduces the cooldown on roll dodge. Each piece of heavy increases healing received and amount of damage blocked.

ETA: Aside from that, though, each piece of gear gives the same resistances no matter the weight, so that's not a reason to try to use different weights like it is for players.

It doesn't go for PC/Mac when you're using gamepad mode. :)

We do get to see companions' progress to next overall combat level, but we don't get breakdowns of how much xp they have in each skill line (only a progress bar with no numbers) or any tooltips. It does say to equip 3 pieces of gear to unlock the armor lines, but it doesn't say to use 5 to level them.

Gamepad mode/console UI habitually gets the short end of the stick when it comes to information like this. For anyone trying to be as informed as possible it's crippling by comparison to keyboard mode, not even counting the additional information that add-ons can supply.
