In the Future: "Old Places & Villains"
If you are going to bring back an Old Enemy then do it in a New Zone -- If you are going to bring back an Old area then create a New enemy.
Good examples of this:
2014: we returned to some places we've been before but this time we faced against Molag Bal, who we've not explored much in past titles
2017: We came back to Vvardenfel but the threat was Clavicus Vile and not Dagoth Ur
2019: "Season of the Dragon" was something familiar (Dragons) wrapped in something new (Elsweyr)
However, 2020 & 2021 were both old areas with old enemies.
We've seen Vampire Lords in Skyrim before (Dawnguard) - and honestly the villain of 2020, Rada al-Saran, was more suited to a Hammerfell/Vampire themed expansion which would have been a refreshing way to tackle a Vampire year in my honest opinion - and I'm sure they could have added a Blackreach zone underneath Hammerfell
The Dark Heart of Skyrim storyline should have focused on "Void Storms" and just been about Void monsters. The "Dark Heart" literally was not brought up until Q4 Markarth....Nothing in Greymoor (the $40 - $60 chapter) was about the Dark Heart. If both Q2 & Q4 were about Void Creatures I think we would have had a more interesting & coherent year because 2020 was a hodge-podge that lacked focus.
Meanwhile "Blackwood" is Cyrodil and Dagon...again. Luckily it blends in Black Marsh to freshen things up a little.
I am NOT saying to never bring back old stuff.
What I am saying is don't bring back old stuff without adding something new to make it a fresh experience. Don't bring old areas with old enemies.
Example: when we eventually go to the Shivering Isles - don't make the threat Jyggalag. We've seen it before so the threat should be different this time around - like Peryite
