After hearing about how weak they were during PC's PTS i vowed to not use them as they would serve no purpose to my game play, etc. Well I unlocked them anyhow for the sole purpose for a tag along while I'm out and about by myself.

It's kind of of fun to have a little companion while lets say running through the desert alone at night chatting once in a while. They're not perfect and have their quirks but in a sense I don't hate their presence either they're just not useful in vet content that's all.

As a veteran player I would disagree they are totally useless in all vet content. I personally do not use mine for anything other than just the dailies to increase their rapport, but I did watch a live stream of a player who took Bastian to tank vDSA as a test of whether the companion could even do it or not, and he did just fine which I did not expect. Granted vDSA is not challenging anymore and he was getting regular heals from the group, but aside from some positioning issues now and then they completed the whole run with him - so they can be helpful for some people.

Well maybe not totally but then again idk...I don't have any of them max leveled or properly geared yet I'm just going off testing feedback I followed back during PC's PTS. The majority of us are just going to roll with our friends for veteran content. Like some stated earlier... they're mostly helpful to the newer ESO player. If someone completes some challenging feats with them (and I'm sure some will) it wont be the norm for the majority of the player base.

They're not supposed to replace anyone, you could still play Skyrim entirely alone, and yet many people loved roaming with companions, half of the conversation involving Skryim is about companions and just look how much support they get in the modding community, half of Skyrim's nexus are companion mods. Constantly complaining about them does nothing its a much needed feature people WANT hence so many topics about companions now. People have always loved them in RPGs. Nobody is forcing anyone to use them. Ignore them completely if you must, but don't pretend people don't want them.

Frankly i'm a bit surprised that there are even some existing people questioning their existence in an MMO which prides itself on story-centric content and solo play and solo exploration. How are you surprised that in a game that plays more like a single player TES than it does an mmo, that people want to have the ENTIRE experience of that, which includes the ability to have companions like in the real TES games.

I wasn't suggesting that they would be replacing players. I have a guild and run vet content with people not companions, lol

Just saying they have a purpose for players that enjoy it. There is little need to insist that they have no value in the game when clearly they do for many - even if that is not me or you.

I'm largely interested in Companions for the roleplay. There's a couple issues I have with it from that perspective.

Their quests seem rather well done, but outside of that, they are just along for the ride. The rapport system doesn't make up for for the dearth of meaningful dialogue outside of the quests. I'm writing my way through Blackwood's quests, and while I came up with what I think are some good roleplay interactions for Varanis and Mirri, in terms of actual gameplay Mirri just trotted along and her commentary last night was banal stuff like "I was tired of walking" when we mounted up.

The roleplaying is all one-sided outside of the few quests. ZOS chose to limit the customization of Companions to preserve their identity, but the result is that we end up conforming our behavior to their likes and dislikes, or else we have to take the rapport hit. Or we play the thoroughly unimmersive micromanagement minigame where we dismiss our Companions before doing something they dislike. Sure, we can change how our Companion fights, but there's no way to change how they act outside of combat. There's no give-and-take in the relationship, if that makes sense.

It's really a system where you have to use your imagination to roleplay with Companions outside of their few quests. If you take the time to stop questing and think through what's happening, how your character and your companion might react to events and each other, then it can be really fun. If we flip the perspective and ask "What does Mirri/Bastian think of this weird player they've signed up with?", that makes for some interesting interactions...but all in your inagination.

I really didn't expect all that much more from ZOS, to be honest. This isn't Serana, where we've got a whole DLC worth of quests tailored around their characters. Nor did I really expect ZOS to add Companion commentary for after old quests and a variety of content. They seem to have envisioned Companions more as customizable combat pets with just a few quests to make them relatable.

I am not really in this game to roleplay, but my take on the companions for a roleplay subject was pretty grim.

You cannot do anything with them. If you go to an inn, they won't sit, and they won't have an ale with you. They just do their own thing. I really can't imagine any serious role player using them for anything at all.

I guess it is as you say... It's really a system where you have to use your imagination to roleplay with Companions. Is that satisfying across the roleplaying community?

Honestly, for this being an MMORPG, ZOS really needs to find someone to guide them on that "RP" part. I think ZOS is under the impression that they role and we play.

Yeah, I don't know how the Companions fit for the roleplayers who like to act out their roleplay with emotes and chat. Like you, I suspect the interactivity of Companions is very lacking for those folks.

My roleplay is more self-directed imagination/writing, so Companions work okay for me. But no better than just okay.

She talks about checking the local fare because she is hungry, but I see no way to really do that. Annoying.

So I've been very careful not to grab a bug since getting Mirri, finally accidentally gathered one, but backed out of the menu which left the bug still flying there and still got the rapport decrease? Kinda lame if I didn't actually kill/hurt the bug.

That poor bug was probably terrified the whole time you were holding it...

You need to let the bug fly in your face and do nothing or she is bothered.

I regularly have bugs jump in front of the plant I am harvesting. Quite annoying!

I hate the butterfly thats near that North Dragon wayshrine in Northern Elsweyr. I just want to use the wayshrine when it flies in front and I accidentally click it. Just peeking in it, not even taking it, lowers the rapport with Mirri.

The butterfly/torchbug thing wouldn't be nearly as bad if they didn't place them at every damned wayshrine and next to everything you loot in delves, etc. I shouldn't have to dismiss her every time I need to press 'E'. It's bad enough I have to put her away to use Blade of Woe and I forget at least once a day. I don't use Bastion because he doesn't like stealing and stealing is everywhere in the game... do you want Motif's/Furnishings or not?!? Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood are part of the game and companions should play well with those quest lines, too.

The best (only) use I've found for Mirri is running chests as she is good at tanking trash while I open chests and then you get some bonus loot most of the time too.

Next, this goes for ALL NPC's who follow us through quests. MAKE THEM STAND BACK 5 METERS... rather than on my [snip] and constantly in the way of looting! [snip]
