Companion not healing me

I was lucky enough to get some light armour bits and a restoration staff to drop from a few dungeon runs for my companion. Now the problem I have is I've set him up with the healing spells he has at the moment but he isn't healing me at all, he just DPS's with his staff totally ignoring me even though he has the healing skills on his bar....is it supposed to be like this because it's kind of useless if it is.

They won't run up to you to use it, if its not on cooldown they will use the ability as it comes up in the rotation with conditions met and it automatically targets whoever is within range of 28 meters be it you, someone else, or themselves if no target can be found. So if you want them to heal you then stand close to them to be an eligible target, if you give them Blessing of Protection stand in front of them when it comes up cuz they won't move to position themselves for more targets.

How many skills spots do you have unlocked? The more healing skills you add, the better they do. Once all 5 are unlocked and filled with the healing skills, they do great. I haven't died once (well, except for fall damage, lol) since I started using Mirri.

I have 4 unlocked on Bastion but I've changed to Miri now after reading she's supposedly the better choice.
