Companions need social distancing

I use a controller, and ever since I started trying a companion... they're every reas0n I ask people to dismiss bankers and merchants in dungeons and trials. I try to interact with something I get talk to the companion, I try to jump I get talk to the companion, anywhere I am they're right on me, and so is their talk with.

Something about Bethesda and Companions (Except Serana) they just seem to love riding up on us, they need to keep their distance, or at least their interaction does unless approached

Well, at least in this game they can't push you off a cliff. Thanks, Meeko.

No but when you need to jump or interact with something or die...

Stone under your feet crumbling into lava? Seems like the perfect time to have a chat with your companion!

Honestly, to me they barely ever get in the way.

However, it would be great to have a hotkey that disables interacting with them. And after the same key again enables interacting with them.

I agree on that. Chat in the middle of the fight is quite often & annoying. If there is no way to change skills or equipment during fight, maybe companion menu should be also turn off.

But that lead us to other issue - overland content in which you are constantly in "combat", even if you don't see any enemy on the horizon XD

I like the hotkey idea, as to barely getting in the way I'd hazard a guess that you don't use a controller? the A button is used for jumping, and interactions, so far Bas has been on my butt nearly every time I go to click on something

Search for the addon “No Interact”.
You can set a keybind to disable or re-enable interaction with pretty much anything. I use it on seats, cooking stations, and quest NPC followers.
Now with the companions released, I’ve blocked Mirri, butterflies, and torchbugs. I just re-enable interaction with Mirri if I ever need to talk to her.

It doesn’t keep her from blocking objects, but it keeps you from accidentally talking to her.

If you’re not on PC, then I’m sorry. :'(

I'm on PC but I use a controller, some addons don't play well with them but thanks I'll look into it :)

Not asking sarcastically, I genuinely want to know if someone has a good answer here:

Is there even any good reason to talk to Companions during combat?

It seems like the obvious solution would be just to make it where Assistants & Companions simply can't be interacted with during combat, but I've been wanting that feature for like 5 years since so many people love leaving their Nuzimeh out during combat in random Dungeons and stuff. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Or even better, make it like that bug (or I assume it's a bug) where you can't open the chests at the end of rounds in Maelstrom & Vateshran until like 5 seconds after combat ends, or you do a dodge roll or something. Then they wouldn't even bother you for those few seconds after combat is over but you're just trying to loot the corpses under their feet! Having them open convos with you when you're trying to loot the things you just killed is almost as annoying as them starting a chat during a boss fight. Almost.

The inability to interact with chests and nodes after combat happens anytime you kill a summons, like when a wolf howls and the pups come in. I dislike this "feature" too since you can be fighting to clear a node and even after you've finished someone else can rush in and steal what you just fought for. This has been going on ever since I started playing, I reported it but nothing was ever done.

I thought that one of the things they were going to fix was the bug where summoned creatures, particularly the bear, parked themselves right on your location at certain times. I thought they were going to give them some distance.

This is the number one request with companions.

I never had this issue and I was thinking that companions have way too much distancing, so much so that they feel like an assassin tracking me down from a distance rather than a ''companion''. I am at a walking pace and they have to run to reach me... I think a distance slider could solve both of our problems.

Praise Vivec - I thought I was the only one who suffered my this issue.

Treasure chest, always in the way. But jumping is the worst - always in the way.

Not sure about how difficult it is for ZOS for fix this.....maybe a long press instead of regular press? That simple?

Does anyone interact with their Companion regularly? If so, let me know - I am curious.

    Tanks!

I do wish that they followed further away. It's annoying when you're trying to jump somewhere and the companion gets in the way. I shouldn't have to dismiss them just to jump or loot. Have them stand back.

The addon "No Interact" works great, not only can I blacklist companions but I've blacklisted all the insects so I don't harvest them while I have Mirri out. It also removes interaction with empty containers (crates, dressers, etc) big plus for that. I also blacklist any NPC that follows during a quest for the same reason, toggling the blacklist is easy enough too you just have to pick your keys in Keybinds - Addons

An optional toggle would be the best. I actually like the way the companions follow you in ESO, but I get it if some don't. I play games where companions follow from so far away that you feel you have the plague, and I appreciate they don't do that here.

Also, if they stay close to the player, others can see which companion is following whom, which is great for people watching.

I agree. The hitbox is out of control. Questing in cold harbor was a major headache and I had to un summon my companion several times to progress.

ZOS did some work to address selection priority. It is better.

I still think that when the Mirri and Bastian AI approaches us, they should stop well short of where their interaction area intersects us. I am perfectly fine walking to them if I want to talk to them.
