Are companion levels account wide?

Or do you have to level them on each character?

levels - yes accountwide, so any playing you do on alts for example will count towards the xp/level gain for companions on all your characters. rapport (which is the part that in my experience takes much longer) is per character though.

As said, rapport is per character. So is mount/costume selection. Gear, skills and leveling is account wide.
PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

Gear selection as well? I unlocked only one companion so far on only one of my characters but on PTS gear was shared across the account as well.

Yes, account levels are account wide.

I have unlocked both Mirri and Bastion on 10 characters so far.

First, you must unlock the companion on each character by having each character complete the first companion quest. After that, the companion's levels are account-wide. This includes the character level (to a max of 20); fighters guild, mages guild, and undaunted (max of level 11 each); companion Abilities; armor and weapons Abilities; etc. This is certainly nice, since I certainly did not want to run 20 guild daily quests for each one of my characters! A companion's gear (armor, weapons, jewelry) is also account-wide; so when you swap characters, the companion will have the same gear as when you logged-off your previous character.

However, the selection of a Companion's costume and mount are character-specific, NOT account wide.

Not true about Rapport. Rapport is account-wide, not character specific. I have unlocked both companions on 10 characters so far. Most of Mirri's rapport was developed on my main character. As I swapped among the other 9 characters, they all had the same Rapport with Mirri as my main character. I was be wrong: Companion Rapport is per-character, not account-wide.

huh... interesting. it was definitely character only on pts. if they fixed it, that's definitely an improvement. still disappointing system (to me) but at least its slightly less grindy. I hope its not a bug with a visual representation only. did you unlock enough rapport with Miri to get at least one of her personal quests? if yes, were you able to pick it up on alts as well?

Really good points Linaleah. Now I am wondering how it works.

The rapport indication does not have a numerical value, but the pointer appeared (to my uncalibrated eyeball) to be at the same position for all 10 characters. But inspired by your comment, I used a ruler to measure the distance on the screen.

9 of the 10 characters have the exact same distance on rapport. However, for main character, the rapport pointer is 2 mm more advanced. This is a tiny difference (delta), to be sure, but it certainly suggests that I was wrong, and that rapport is character-specific. Also, excellent point about unlocking the companion quests. I will watch for it when it happens. It would make most sense for that to be character-specific, and not account wide.

Update: On my main character, the Rapport pointer is definitely more advanced now than all other characters. In fact, my main character just got the first Companion quest (at about the 60% position on Rapport). So thanks Linaleah for correcting my misunderstanding.

It is rather amusing to have a level 5 character with a level 9 companion. Makes you wonder who is actually the adventurer and who is the companion. The annoying part is the sharing of skill selections across the account.

Yes, gear that you give to a companion will stay with that companion no matter which character they travel with (account wide).

Also you can do fighter's, mage's, and undaunted daily quest on all of your characters to level up the companions skill line a lot faster.
