I have Blackwood but I'm new and there is so much content I haven't gotten to yet so I'm in no hurry. So I haven't spent any time with either of the companions. I keep hearing people send them away when they want to steal or kill bugs. What happens if you just do what you want and ignore their protests? What are they going to do leave?

Yes, eventually they will leave if you push their Rapport low enough.

They've got their Rapport meter that spans from red (hate your guts) to green (BFFs) -- and it moves pretty slowly. People are trying to get maxed out on the green side (for achievements, related bonuses, etc), and because progress is so slow no one really loves the idea of having minor stuff like harvesting bugs or crafting mead negate their efforts.

That makes sense. I didn't realize they could leave you and that there are achievements associated with them.
