Companions are too much work

I was looking forward to them even though I knew that their help would be limited. What I didn't expect is how much work they would be.

I only play 3 characters, but if each one has 2 companions to develop that is basically like maintaining 6 new alts.

It's all I can do to keep my own characters geared and figure out what CP and skills I need to use... there is no way I am doing this on 6 companions, too. When I think about getting them setup I don't even want to log in.

Are they really as much work as I think, or am I missing something?

I think the downsides/cons of having the companions summoned is too much. They block objects, you lose rapport just by doing normal gameplay things... Ugh. They feel like a chore.

You are missing something... companions level ACCOUNT WIDE... so whatever you level on one character carries across to the others. However, what is the REAL pain, is gearing them... since decent gear drops are very very rare.

So whatever skills I choose, and gear etc. remains the same on all of them? So it's more like setting up just 2 alts as opposed to 2 for each of my alts?

Yes... all gear, slotted skills, etc... carry across to all characters.

I have 18 characters, this is great for me. I treat them as passive pets that don't take up a skill slot and they're low maintenance. If I get gear for them then cool, if not then no big deal; same if they die in combat, no skin off my back they'll be back up once combat is over. They are combat fodder nothing more, I get a little extra damage while doing my usual activities.

If you treat them as a big hassle then yeah they will be a source of frustration; however, if you treat them as just another pet following you around and give no concern to their well-being then they can be a lot of fun to have around. If they draw aggro, I don't really care, if they die I don't care, they can in white gear forever I don't care. In fact its probably better to sell any blue and purple Companion gear you get as they would be highest value now while their hype is still fresh.

I only have two chars and each has 1 companion for entertainment - Bastian lives in one world with my sorc main, Mirri in the other with my necro alt. I like the fact that it doesn't go so quickly and easily until they are fully equipped; that opens up new tasks.

I'm enjoying my companions. I do a lot of gathering and sending a companion to attack a mob while I'm gathering the node is quite handy. I've done a couple dungeons with Bastion tanking and he has done just fine in white gear. That's the good part, the bad is:

    1. I was hoping for the kind of banter I got in a dragon-focused game with companions. NOPE, not even close.
    2. Gearing is a major piece of excrement. I don't expect it to be easy, but current drop rate is utter BS!
    3. Leveling a companion is MORE grindy than leveling a character -- that's just not right.
    4. Having to go out and do the companion acquisition quests ad nauseum on every alt is ridiculous.

I do hope ZOS will tend to these issue or their entire companion system is likely to fail.

I'm glad I asked. I was making them more work than they are. Thanks for the replies!

Zos should have made this post their marketing pitch, lol.

Their outfits aren't the same on all characters. I spent a lot of time fitting them both with new outfits, but when I logged on another alt they were back to the defaults again.

Is there a way to copy the outfit or do I need to set it all up again?

NM, I hadn't changed to the companion outfit.

as a solo player (mostly) i like compagnions
just take them out when you play, they level up with you
i had compagnions since skyrim (no online) and it was fun
they are helpfull in fight (like a sorcerer pets they can give you health and some firepower)
so i am happy with them in pve

(i also play a lot in PVP but you dont need them there)

I don't mind the rate companions level at, eventually they will be level 20 anyways. And the leveling isn't really slow. I also do not mind the low droprate on companiongear. As these things are accountwide, so eventually they will be geared/leveled.

But the rapportdecreases should be removed, as they are basically telling you to play the game a certain way. While we have to remember the likes/dislikes for each companion, which is a huge downside. Especially if they add more companions in the future. Just slow down the favorable rapportgains somewhat, and remove the dislike rapportdecreases. Just let the companions say they dislike what I'm doing, and be done with it.

The grind for the companion guild-skilllines, is something I am worried about. This is going to take a long long time. Not sure how much of a difference those skilllines make, but this does seem like the biggest companion grind.

Grinding-wise, companions are in a good spot.

PS: Besides the rapport and companionquests, they are accountwide.

when i download mods that give companions in any other game mmo or single player, i simply walk up to the companion, ask that companion to follow me, and boom, i got myself a companion.
but here in eso, its a huge hassle and all kinds of quest and problems and not even allowed fair armor for the companion and they made the companions extremely Weak.
