NPC and Companion interaction hit boxes interfere with everything

The interaction range for the Companions and for quest followers and other NPCs is huge. I have to do tiny laps around quest objectives, mobs, and containers to move them out of the way and try to loot them before the NPCs catch up to me, and others' Companions get in the way like pets. This is growing increasingly frustrating with every container! I'd rather not have to toggle the Companion every time I want to pick stuff up or interact with a quest objective. Is there another way around this, other than just not using Companions at all?
