Y'know what, they're really fun. One randomly popped up on my way to unlock Mirri, and I thought "go on then, let's have it".

Honestly, it was a blast. I loved it.

Now, I haven't checked yet, but is there an achievement for finishing 60 of them? That'd be a nice cheeky nod to TES: IV.

Were you able to actually... you know, fight anything?!

When I went into one, it was just a madhouse rush of randoms streaming toward the end boss... where it was just an apocalypse of lights and explosions until a health bar would occasionally appear & deplete in an instant. :P

From testing on the PTS, I kind of had the idea that instances could only be around 6 to 8 players, but today on Live I went into one and saw an ungodly horde of players similar to what you get at Alik'r Dolmens during XP events. I only did the one today, but I was blown away at how little I really got to participate; in contrast with my experiences on the PTS where I mostly had to solo them or maybe have a random or few show up to help on occasion.

Did you solo it and was it like a delve or public dungeon?

It's like a Public Dungeon that has multiple entrances, essentially. You come through whatever Portal you stumble across in Blackwood, and that dumps you off on one of a few different fiery islands in a huge lava lake. Seems to be random which area is starts you out in, but all paths eventually lead you to the center where you fight the big bad boss boy, and then you loot your chest and leave (or wait for respawn if you're farming, I guess).

So it's kind of a new weird Public Dungeon hybrid thing; afaik we've never had anything quite like it. When you're loading in it clearly says Public Dungeon on the loading screen, but it functions kinda like some of the newer DLC Delves in that it's large-ish and kind of gives you quasi-freedom to "explore" a bit on your way to the end boss. It's fairly linear, despite the multiple paths thing; it seems obviously intended to be a "one-way" trip toward the center end boss per encounter, since the alternate paths aren't really accessible without leaving then finding new Portals and repeating the whole encounter.

On the PTS there are less people overall, so I (and many others, it's not some rare feat) did solo it a handful of times in testing, but I don't see how anyone could solo one on the Live servers today. Unless they somehow got into a bugged instance that never brought in any other players, I guess. Like I said in my previous comment, the one I ended up in was absolutely SWARMED with players by the end boss fight. It was bonkers!

There is a very easy to access Portal that spawns just across the water from that Leyawiin Outskirts Wayshrine on that little outcropping of land, and it seems to open up fairly often. You can see it from the Wayshrine shore if you're just looking the right direction. Easiest one to find that I know of.
