So, there is no Dragon Break. ZOS said it, said it clearly and said it thousands of times. I was writing numerous posts about continuity problem, tried to find explanations, asked the game's writers to answer to me... But it feels like it's all in vain. If the official answer will anyhow be there, I don't believe that it's going to be comprehensive and global. Writers have already said that they don't work with meta-lore like C0DA and try to keep it simple.
Maybe they want to keep it simple, but some players don't. In searching for the answer, I somehow reached Imperial Library Discord server. After a quick familiarization in there, I decided to ask it.
One of the members told me about simple theory - "book theory", where all the events are simple chapters of some book. It is a nice theory, simple one. I thought about it myself, but there was one problem. Book is clear, certain. If some thing is said there, it is a fact. If you write or read a book and forget about some fact, you can re-read it.
But what you can't re-read are stories and tells told by some storyteller. And since TESO's story is broken at times, this storyteller seems to be a little... incompetent. They can tell interesting stories, really breathtaking ones... But their connectivity isn't very good. And sometimes these stories aren't even truth.
So... Who can tell some uncertain stories and sometimes lie or exaggerrate? It feels like we're talking about a very, very stereotypical Khajiit.
This is why I suggest a new, final theory on the game's broken continuity - Khajiit Break. Like Dragon Break... But it's Khajiits.
Also, I know what Khajiit we're talking about. Two of them!
Haven't you ever though what would happen if M'Aiq Liar met Pacrooti at some camp after this long 2E 582 and they decided to tell each other some stories they've heard or seen? This is going to be a mess! A story of argues where they exaggeratedly told about the same events, but different versions of it. Well, of course they listened to each other... sometimes.
And our character was in this camp. And decided to listen to all these stories. And they were so interesting so he or she started to project themselves as their protagonist.
Even though this theory, just as any headcanon, is pretty strained, it explains many things:
- Why the game has a linear order of stories which pretends to be non-linear;
- Why characters from "the past" don't recognize you at future or the ones from "the future" recognize you in "the past";
- Why you're referred (and even refer yourself) as soulless after recovering your soul... or even before losing it;
- Why you can wear some strange armor and why everyone around you can wear it as well;
- Why you won't have any problems in being, for example, a Khajiit in Ebonheart Pact;
- Why Pacrooti always appears on Crown Crates screen;
...and so on.
This is going to be a typical The Elder Scrolls' reflection of character's actions in the series. Everything can be noted: starting from a Dragon Break and finishing small bandits' notes, but protagonist's adventures can never be recorded in writing: only stories and tells. Since The Vestige/Savior of Tamriel travelled all across Tamriel, they can be remembered by some traders very good.
Of course, you can believe anything you want. You may be a huge Lore fan as I am, you can be a simple player who has always skipped dialogues and decided to read them once... But when you encounter these problems and think about them deeply, you'll be tired of finding comprehensive answer on your questions.
Still, of course, ZOS writers can try to give their own version. But they give no one. They don't really care, I suppose. Probably, they have accepted everything and haven't told us. I wish if it was explained officially, but, as I told before, they probably won't put very much effort into that global explanation while they have smaller stories they can do brilliantly.
So this is it. Khajiit Break. Why not?
Even though TESO is a great game, it suffers from
continuity issues that may hurt narrative experience and confuse lore-caring players. If we want TESO to be a decent exemplar in The Elder Scrolls series, these problems need to be fixed. Please, acknowledge with this information more
