PSA: It's "QUEUE" not "que"

Not trying to be the grammar police or anything here, but...

'Que' is Spanish for 'what' in most contexts, and it's pronounced pretty close to "kay" when said aloud. Queue is the word you're actually looking for. It's pronounced just like the letter Q, or "kyoo" when spoken, in case it's one of those words you only ever read and not hear people use in real life.

A lot of folks probably just don't care, but some probably would care and simply are unaware of the error. Since this word seems to come up in seemingly every other thread lately, and roughly 50% of the people in those threads use 'que' when they mean 'queue' it seemed like this was a needed PSA. So there ya go, there's the Public Service Announcement to help y'all out!

While I'm being all pedantic about things next to no one cares about...

"Ya" is like slang / short for "You" or "Your" -- Ya know what I mean? Get ya **** together, guys!

"Yea" is an old timey (or overly-formal) way of saying / voting "Yes" and is pronounced like "yay" ... so when you write 'yea' you sound like you're voting in the 1800s.

"Yeah" is the word you're looking for. As in, "Should @GreenHere be banned from the forums forever?" ... "Yeah, probably."

And "yay!" is like excitement & joy. Not interchangeable for "yeah" at all. :P

Anyone else got some nitpicky word nerd stuff to vent about? :D

    Yeah.

People that use abbreviations such as PSA without first identifying what the abbreviation stands for. You did eventually get around to telling us PSA is public service announcement but since we are nit picking it should have happened in the title.

Actually that's one of those I can see the sense in. DPS being used as an abbreviation for the statistic, or as a verb, or as a designation for the role responsible for it... well, it all just kind of fits nicely to my mind.

I actually prefer when people write DPS as opposed to DD because "DD" is just so generic that my brain often tries to match it up with other abbreviations if there's not enough context for it to click right away. DD is used as an abbreviation for kind of a lot of things in the adult world, annoyingly.

If people started referring to Healers as HPS, though... I imagine that would irk me greatly, haha.

Sometimes people will type an abbr (abbreviation) then proceed to type out the whole thing anyway, which always strikes me as a little funny. Like, you saved time typing the whole word... so you could type the whole word right after in parenthesis?

I get it when you have to type a whole longasswordnoonewantstotype20times (hereafter referred to as LAW) then put the abbreviation in parenthesis to signify that you aren't gonna be typing it out over and over, though. It's just funny when people do it in reverse... for a word they only use once.

But I do get what you're saying. It can be annoying, especially in gaming, when everyone just throws around nothing but abbreviations with no context constantly. I see that in guild chats a lot... in guilds that are centered around helping newbies learn the game. The awkward confusion that ensues is often amusing.

Do they not have PSAs anymore? Am I old, or is that a regional thing, or something like that? I thought just about everyone knew what a PSA was. Or were you just using it as an example, @kargen27 ?

PSA is fairly common in these forums. Usually dealing with a bug in game. I used PSA because you used PSA. There are some abbreviations I have to look up. Dungeon and trial names still puzzle me from time to time. I understand the use in zone or guild chat though.
What really bugs me is people in Discord using abbreviations in voice chat.

We're probably another 10-20 years away from "Que" or "Cue" completely replacing "Queue" in American English use.

Language changes, and usually toward streamlining.

back before wow destroyed all that is good and right in world with dps meters(or maybe someone added them to eq1 in the early days?), there was lineage 2, the class groupings were tank, healer, DD, support. i dont remember queues for anything, except when looking for group the old fashioned way.

And then there's one current thread where people actually do mean "cue" (as in, combat cues) but write "queue" instead. :D

Can we, like, switch to Esperanto? Or some other language with sensible spelling rules? :D

    Maybe you aren't old enough.

I remember "Public Service Announcements" but never heard the PSA abbreviation till here on the forums.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

That's called metonymy. It's a perfectly valid rhetorical device, not an eggcorn.

Though a primary English speaker, I lived in France as a child where I was first exposed to the word queue and learned its origin from Latin meaning the tail of an animal. It made sense at that point when people get in a line, it resembles the tail of an animal or to queue up. So the word has been familiar to me for decades though not often used in English. Even more rarely for its other meanings such as a long single braid of hair or ponytail.

Could everyone please stop using the term "strawman" to describe an argument or claim you find weak, exaggerated, or false? This is not even close to what the term means.
