I don't think it is a good idea for non members to join the guild discord.

Eh, it depends. You can assign membership roles to people and that would grant them greater access to the Discord server. Being able to view sections that detail a lot more about the guild is nice. I think Discord replaced guild websites such as GuildLaunch.com and Enjin for a lot of guilds on ESO

They can setup their Discord server like how we used to setup our Vent and TS servers. Simply entering the server puts you in a "lobby" where you have no voice or text privileges, and you don't have access to other channels until you're granted a "member" rank (nomenclature will vary). You can hide all voice rooms and assign access based on server rank, so when a person becomes a member, an officer will obviously grant them full discord access along with it.

It was how we policed rando's from join the server and spamming anything in any of the chat rooms. But someone has to set that up, and most guild leads are probably too lazy to do so.

We did that at first, and we got a lot of trolls who would come in and spam channels or hop into voice and start dropping a variety of racial slurs. So we keep it in the Guild MOTD, but we do state that discord is required for event participation in our finder description. On the up side, we've certainly banned and reported a number of racists and trolls.

You get the Discord and TS links once you've joined the guild, or if you want to join one of our events beforehand to check us out.

Otherwise, it's private.

My discord is the hub of my guild's community and I have a number of very active discord members who aren't members in game. It doesn't really matter to me if people join in game or not, I'm just glad they want to hang out with us (and many do wind up joining in game once they have a guild spot available).

But that's why my discord link is included in the guild listing. It's also posted in other discords and in the guild About Us.

Am guild leader in another game than ESO. We use discord. What we do is that we have a "Public" section and a "Guild" section. Basically, the public one is opened to all. We need it because we do voice command only for some activities, out of which one in particular has squad of up to 50 players. The public section is then ideal. We don't need to give special authorization just for the duration of the squad run. The only rule we have is to set the nickname to the game ID to be able to control if we have more in voice channel than in squad.

And aside of public, the guild section has two parts, a text one used like a forum and the voice channels, however seen/used by guildies only.

I believe it's a good structure, allowing for both guildies and non-guildies.

Maybe they aren't sure how to reference the guild MOTD or information sections? I don't know; is the guild window different with the gamepad UI? I've only used the gamepad UI to help another player confirm a bug, so I'm not sure how the information it gives compares to the MKB mode.

Most guilds that require you to use Discord or TeamSpeak don't require you to join those platforms before joining but rather after joining. Then the MOTD or Guild Info panel is sufficient.

Not really, no. Many reasons were stated above.

What I would like to recommend or remind however, is to actually read the text on guild description before applying. Many people don't even bother reading half a page of text before they apply, can you imagine what would happen if you put your guild's discord in there?

If you require mor information on the other hand, you can simply send an in-game mail to the GM or write it in your application message. Sounds much more practical, right?

The Guild Finder listing should be about advertising what your guild offers and what it expects from applicants/members. Reading it thoroughly to know in advance if you are under level for applying or if parts of the guild description do not match the criteria you are looking for will save both you and the guild's leadership future headaches.

Once you have determined that a guild sounds like a good fit, apply. If accepted, then actually READ the MOTD (Message of the Day), which is easily accessible by going to the Social --> Guilds --> Guild You Joined's Name. This is, at least on PS4 NA, where you will find the more pertinent info that actual guild members need, such as where the guild trader is (if one is active that week), a link to the Discord, and any brief description of guild rules (such as expectations for being active i.e. "we have a 2-week inactive policy" sort of thing), weekly trader dues or sales expectations, current available raffles/auction/guild event info, and who to contact for issues/whose house to visit for crafting needs, etc. It also behooves you to actually at least glance through the MOTD again if you get a notification that it changed - this is the most direct way for (console) guild leadership to communicate with guildmates across the board (especially for those who don't do Discord). I can't tell you the number of times I see who in my guild actually reads the MOTD or ignores it when I update it with something important (like recently when you needed to let me know you're actually active since the roster doesn't show that very well the past 2 months - the number of people I spotted online who might have otherwise gotten kicked for potential inactivity because they couldn't take 2 seconds to read the MOTD and drop me a line was eye-opening). LOL

Discord is for guild members and MOTD is the usual place to find it. Guild Finder is for public advertising.

I actually made my guild listing as a joke to link in cyro chat to make fun of the guilds that link theirs after every keep or rss take...says my pvp guild is an Argonian ERP fishing guild....now as a result my guild is made up of pvpers and a few Lizard ERP fisherman who joined through the guild finder...best thing I have done w my guild in the 3.5 years it has been around LMAO

I agree with the above comments, new members get the Discord link from the MOTD after they join the guild. I have no interest in publishing it for everyone to see in the guild finder.

I've almost always had access (possibly limited) to a guilds discord before joining. Guild finder information and recruitment posts are often quite limited, and sometimes out of date or aspirational. For example, for PvE raid guilds, I can't usually tell without discord access what schedule they most run trials at, whether it's mostly cores or open runs, whether they're running content that's appropriate for my personal skill level or not. It typically hasn't been a problem to get that access when offering a sincere explanation to the lead /officer.

They are talking about the guild finder, so they haven't yet joined that guild and don't have access to MOTD and such.

@kringled_1 offered a reasonable explanation as to why one would want that, and we would have no problem providing that upon request.

Yep, a system like that works great. And it's so easy to setup, a caveman could do it!

Why would someone want you in their discord if you haven't been accepted to their guild yet? That's something they can send you on acceptance.

If you’re already finding guild finder details out of date, imagine how much more annoying it would be if they also had expired Discord links.

Agreed, that would be pointless. I was just trying to fill in the details on why someone would want that access. Link in the guild finder post may not be the best way to provide it.

Having run several game chat servers for years, discord being the current iteration in vogue. I can testify that the number of trolls posting unsavory images and foul chat text is a real problem when you make such servers public.

I had one guy whose avatar was VERY pornographic just recently. Did not even have to see any text or voice chat, right out of the gate they were offensive with the discord avatar.

I stay away from guilds with secret Discord servers.

It is sad that Discord does not allow a private server to have a public access section where read-only rules, regulations, and expectations can be posted and maintained.

I never trust the Guild Finder information to be up to date. Discords are more likely to be updated, especially if they require it, and if the Discord server in the Guild Finder app is gone, then I need go no further.

I would never put my Discord link into a publicly viewable area like the guild recruitment section. That is a horrible idea. My guild discord is for guildmates and friends, not every random person that views the guild finder ad.
