Spears in ESO?

I played the Quest "The Five Finger Dance" in Reapersmarch.
At the end you see some Khajiits with Throwing spears on their back!

Were spears or Throwing spears once a planned thing in ESO and then discarded?

There are javelin- throwing enemies in Wrothgar. Much to my disappointment, it seems to be an NPC-only thing.

I'd love to have spears as a player weapon - not just the Aedric Spear stuff, but actual weapons like we had in Morrowind.

A spear or javelin would have to be a stam weapon, would it not? Stam weapons already far outnumber mag weapons. Perhaps we could get a skill line for hurling one's staff.

Of course, as noted, you can already do this in combat as a Templar, but I know, it's not the same thing.

Wish we had spears, yeah. Pretty good opportunity to have hybrid weapon line with both stamina and magicka morphs, or even better if their effects and resource cost would scale with your primary resource pool.

As for motifs for those, just use same as npcs from Murkmire and Reach - staff ones. We actually getting more and more spear like staves recently so it gives me glimmer of hope. Spear of bitter mercy, rkindaleft, ancestral high elf or imperial champion already fitting enough, we can surely have separated ones which would be a mix of a staff motif and some other elements, it's pretty easy to implement.

Never noticed this, really cool! I love my Aedric spear. Not sure you can make a full skill line out of regular spears but it would be great to have an alternative to bows, I don't like them.

Still unlikely to happen before we get a new magicka weapon

Not necesary. Historically many legendary spears in Indo-European culture had magical abilities, so it could be perfect hybrid weapon, having both magical & stamina skills & morphs ;)

Btw. Argonian spear build I made in Morrowind was my first TES char ever ^^

IIRC, there were original plans for a spear skill line (back in the time of development when Battlemage was a planned class?). But those plans were scrapped, and parts of the skill line became the Aedric Spear skill line for Templars.

Sounds like an excuse to add Illusion staves, alteration staves, and One Hand and Spell!

Whats also wierd is a NPC had a unique flame attack using their hands to shoot flames. I could've been wrong but only noticed cuz it was a NPC in a city that was attacking a player.

Yes. But a big part of the fun with a spear, was to levitate just out of range, and stabby stabby. I killed some serious badass things like that, with my Argonian wizard.

Yes please - I would like Alteration Staves to be the new Tank Staff.

It would be an easy way to make a crit weapon (dagger equivalent) in two handed form. I’m guessing animation issues are preventing this from happening, since a spear wouldn’t use the same motions as a great sword or battleaxe. So we’re left with a strange imbalance where only 3 of the 4 1h weapon types have a 2h version.

    Seriously.

I NEED my Unarmed skill line.

And - while we're at it - Spears, Alteration Staves, Illusion Wands, Mysticism Orbs, and Conjuration Sigils.

    It's time.

Here's a question for people that bring up crossbow - what would make it different from the Bow skill line?

Sure, it would be cool if we had spears, but using Throwing spears in combat would be totally unrealistic (even worse than the bow with its endless supply of arrows). That guy in the pic has four spears = four attacks with a Throwing spear, if we want to make it realistic...

Yes, that´s what I mean, I really hate that. It was so much better in TES Oblivion e.g. - when I needed arrows I had to buy them or collect them from fallen enemies and in the case that I had no more arrows during the battle I was forced to come up with another solution.

Yeah, but in reality archer might have a dozen arrows in quiver at his disposal not hundreds of hundreds of arrows of various types & model ;)

Some archaeological finds say otherwise. There are graves from the steppe region north of the Black Sea from the 1st millennium BC in which were found quivers as grave goods that contained 200-250 arrows of various types. And one archer (on horseback) could have even two quivers, which would mean around 500 arrows/person.

Not really, I can still shoot my bow without using a soul gem, just without "special effect".

Well unfortunately, this is an MMO with skill abilities and bosses that have extremely long health bars. The amount of arrows you would need for some content is... well it is a lot. This is not Skyrim Online - as much as we would like it to be, that ship sailed a while ago.

Spears would be so cool in this game. Wear it on your back like a staff.
