Noob question about armor set bonuses

I can understand all of the bonuses for armor sets, like adds Max Magicka, Spell Critical, Spell Damage, etc. What I don't really understand is when it says "adds armor", for example on Fortified Brass:
(2 items) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
(3 items) Adds 1487 Armor.
(4 items) Adds 1487 Armor.
(5 items) Adds 3460 Armor.

Can someone please explain exactly what "armor" is? Thanks

Each piece of clothing also has an Armor value, which adds to your resistances.
Light armor has the lowest values, medium well medium values and heavy armor has the highest values.

If you look at your stats while swapping different types of armor you'll notice the change in resistances.

To add to @SirAndy Armor is only relevant if you are doing PVP, are tanking in PVE, or want a solo PVE build that has tons of resistance. Even for PVE tanks, sets that add armor are seen as "selfish" tanks versus a group tank that adds resistance, damage, health, debuffs etc. for the group. It would be something a newer tank would use in a dungeon

1487 Armor means 1487 Physical Resistance + 1487 Spell Resistance. It makes you more bulky. When you are new to the game, being bulky is a good thing because it helps you survive incoming damge. As you get more experienced you will need less armor :)
