Using crown gems...

If radiant apex mounts are now available to pruchase with crown gems, and I have a tonne from buying so many crown crates...

Why can't I use my crown gems to gift a radiant apex mount to someone else?

Am I doing something wrong? Constant error message.

Hardly seems fair.

We've never been able to gift items w/ crown gems?

Thank you for the info... whilst I accept that, how is it fair?

I've spent the (hard earned) money on these crown crates, why should it matter if I want an item for myself or to gift it to someone else?

I get you.I would also want to be able to gift my hubby a 400 gem mount as I am the one opening crates sometimes but he does not very often,an option to gift gem mounts would be ideal.
But I guess they won't implement that because then some people would literally sell all the items from crates for gold.

Just the idea of being able to gift regular cash shop items is relatively new in this game, and not available at all in many other games I've seen. It would never occur to me to expect this gifting ability at all.

(or, from a more cynical viewpoint - they want people to only get crate items if they actually buy crates. If you could gift someone an item - rather than them needing to get X number of crates to acquire it randomly - it would be a loss of sales. As opposed to regular crown store items, which being direct purchase, will always get them the same number of crowns for every account that gets one, regardless of who is spending the crowns. Rar, crates evil!™ )

Anyway, look at it this way - you've got the ability to just buy whatever crate items (ok, aside from further Super Big Ticket ones) in future seasons, without needing to buy any more crates.

Crown gems are a "backup" plan for you to get the items that you would like from crates. They are a way of making sure that you don't get completely screwed by RNG and never get the item you actually want.

Being able to gift this special currency to guarantee a specific item would allow for the selling of a specific mount/reward, rather than the chance at one.

The crown gems are your personal reward for opening crates, to be used on things you bought. You are still allowed to gift the crates themselves so your friend has a chance at the items (along with getting gems themselves).

Endeavors in the next patch will work (I assume) the same way. They are account-bound, so you can only buy items from the crate season for yourself.

I totally get from our perspective why we'd want to be able to gift crown gem items. I also get from ZoS' perspective why they would NOT want us to be able to do that...

I get where you’re coming from, it’s just, with the radiant apex, I can’t buy them outright, only with crown gems. What’s the difference whether I use my own gems to get the item for myself or gift it to someone else? Either way, the crown gems will be gone and if I want the item for myself as well, I’ll either need to have already had enough for a second purchase (in which case, I’ve spent a hell of a lot on crates already), or, I will need to buy more for myself.

I guess it's logical that you can't gift items bought with gems, but the only time I wanted to it was to send a gem only item to my own second account.... which also opens crates but didn't have enough gems (account was fairly new at the time).

    I was bummed.

If it were possible to gift items from crown gems then people would sell the crate rewards. This would be a work-a-round for people that would rather spend the $100 on an Radiant Apex vs $1000 for a higher chance. ZOS would rather get your $1000 and it makes sense in a F2P game.

It's not just radiant apex mounts though. The same is true of everything which can be bought with crown gems.

Sometimes there are a few items which had previously been in the crown store for direct sale and then were removed, but they're still not available for direct purchase at the time they're in the crates, and the majority of things have never been available except from crates or with gems.

Like Kiralyn explained it would lead to lower crate sales because many players would be able to find someone willing to gift/sell them the items they wanted rather than having to buy crates to try for them or to amass enough gems to buy it themselves.

It would be much nicer for players if it was possible to gift crown gem items, but it would also be less profitable for ZOS and while they don't want to be too unfair to players they do need to make sure their game is profitable.

It might well make sense in a free-to-play game, but ESO is not F2P. You can play without paying a reoccurring subscription, but you still have to buy the game to do it.

I believe it's a matter of players manifest interest in such a feature and it eventually will be implemented. Until a few months, we couldn't Gift the Houses. Players wanted, they implemented. Why? Because it's of ZOS' interest doing so because it would increase Crown Store's purchases, after all, people are spending real-life money buying Crowns, be it for their own use or to make in-game money from other players.

Thank you... I now get it - I was coming at it from the perspective of just wanting to gift something to a friend.

I didn't think of it as selling to other players - didn't cross my mind at all.
