Free-to-play games and XBOX subscription

Hi,

did someone mention this already?

Got this email a few days ago: "Starting 21 April online multiplayer for free-to-play Xbox games will no longer require a paid subscription" (About time, if I may add)

Since I don't think that most of ZOS revenue comes from sales of the base game, wouldn't be great if ESO was made free-to-play?

I feel it's quite unfair that we have to pay a subscription to MS on top of ESO+ besides if ESO was free-to-play more people would try it, get hooked and buy a gazillion of stuff. (I gifted it to a friend of mine on Steam and now it's his second job, just saying ahah).

Thoughts?

    Do you like bots?

Because that's how you get (even more) bots.

    We (PS) have bots anyhow.

Zensoft should offer account transfers from PS to Xbox like they did from PC to console.

That's why I added 'even more'.

The thing is, the "transfer from PC to console" was to a blank database before the servers opened.

And that created issues already, that most newer players don't know about, like guilds on PC "loaning" console transfers millions of gold before the cut off.

If ZOS decided so offer transfers, there are a number of ways they could do that, and each single approach will leave a part of the playerbase unhappy. But they would have to develop a brand new system rather than do it the way they did at console launch.

I had no issues, not to say others didn't, I have seen other games create gold/mat caps etc..for transfer.

Not happy with transfer rules set by company, dont use it.

Bots are pretty much the only thing you see on the alliance starter islands on XBox. It's barely worth the effort to report them already. If anyone should not like "free to play", it's the existing botters, since they will have more competition.

I don't play F2P games, because they tend to have huge quantities of immature players who cause a lot of problems, not to mention many many bots.

So yeah, if you want this whale to leave, that's how to handle it.

Ouch, you've made some good points, still, the bots issue should be addressed regardless of the game's tag price. Moreover, according to the logic free = more immature players, PC should be ridden with that kind of people since you can buy base ESO for so low that even a 10 years old could afford it, is that the case?

Luckily PC has Fortnite and various MOBAs, so we're pretty safe. Though I've met several players under 18 y.o. the youngest players tend to be in early 20s.

Same here, plus sooner or later they become P2W through the cash shop.

It would be a commercial disaster for ZOS, the present business model gives them excellent subscription revenue and a steady or growing playerbase that is only just sustainable. A mass influx if it went F2P would wreck the servers and require huge investment in the game's infrastructure, with all the subscription revenue lost.

I haven't considered that going F2P would lead to such catastrophic events XD

Ok then, I'll keep paying and complaining.

I am confused... are you trying to convince people that ESO is not F2P, or trying to convince people that it is?

ESO is B2P with an optional subscription. I thought we were both saying we wouldn't want it to go F2P. Which part of our comments suggested otherwise?

ESO is already swarming with bots. ESO already has immature players. There is no purchase of an ESO license required on one platform, and base game prices can dip into single digits on the others. We already have an influx of players that is, apparently, requiring that ZOS spend money on infrastructure. The only thing that ESO apparently has going for it is the optional subscription and a purely dictionary definition of "B2P". Thus, I was confused.

Tranfering accounts is a cluster of issues within its self especially from ps to ms dye to ps and their tight stance on "security"

I wonder if Microsoft would consider it free to play and drop the Xbox subscription requirement if they added a heavily limited free version like Guild Wars 2 did. They technically made the game free to play but it's more like a demo with no time limit. Among other things you can't talk in map (zone) chat or team chat in PvP, can only whisper mutual friends, can't send items or gold in the mail or deposit them into guild banks, can only buy and sell certain items and don't get login rewards, so they're no good for bots or gold sellers and have limited use for trolls but give new players a way to try the game out on their own timescale before buying it and technically it is possible to finish the base game's main story as a free player (although I don't know anyone who did that, they either bought it or quit before that point).

I don't think ESO really needs that, but I can imagine a lot of potential console players are put off by having to pay a subscription just to get the console online, especially if they're expecting to want ESO+ as well and don't play many/any other online games, so if there was a way to get Microsoft to make an exception that could be a good idea.

On the other hand maybe they'll make an exception anyway now it's their game?

Someone told me the prices went up when ZoS removed the bots as they were also farming mats. I don't know if this is true or not. Tell me so I can call him on it.

ZOS would have to remove bots for us to know...
