I'm Angry! Partial chest looters, who are they?

I don't know how to say this nicely, and if this post violates a forum rule for not being nice, I'm sorry ZOS, please lock this thread, but I really want to both express my anger and disgust but do it in a way that abides by your rules (thanks ZOS for running a great forum, but yes, I'm definitely upset in this post).

Deshan is a fantastic place to open chests because of the mother's sorrow gear. I'm doing a chest run and come across a partial looted chest.

"Maybe they ran out of inventory space," I thought. No big deal.
Then another one, and another one. By the fourth chest, I knew there was a narcissistic little brat running around who couldn't care less about anyone else.

What kind of player does is? I was thinking about the personality type, specifically. The player who intentionally leaves chests lying around with a single low quality item to lock them out of respawning is real. Indeed, there are players who do this. This isn't the first time I've seen this and I've only been with ESO for 3 months now.

! Is it legal? Yes. Is it griefing? Absolutely.

If you are a player that does this, no need to hide in the shadows, please speak up. I wont bite. I just want to understand your personality. Do you lack empathy? Do you kick people out of groups over gear? Do you feel entitled to things? Do you get angry easily? I want to understand your personality type. Personally, I cannot understand why someone would do this, and I'd like to know who you are, thank you.

Agreed. I also have an issue with partial resource node looters as well.

That's a lot of anger you're dealing with.

I ran across a few this morning when I was looking for leads. I looted them and moved on. Water off a duck's back.

Sure, some people are inconsiderate, but how you react to it is your choice.

Word on the street is that the respawn timer for chests starts as soon as they're opened, regardless of whether they're emptied or not.

well I won't say it's a lot of anger, but it is indeed frustrating. More than anything, I want to talk to someone who does this so I can understand what is going on in their brain when they do this. I'm almost certain it is intentional, and I want to know what is going on in their mind when they do it to get a sense of what kind of player they are. Most likely, someone in this forum who does this kind of thing will probably hide in the shadows (which says something about them right there), but I would definitely appreciate if someone here who does this would just stand up and start talking.

There are two types of people. Those that care even the slightest bit that there are others playing in the same environment as themselves and those that consider all the other pixels in the game just that. Partial chest looters care nothing for others. It's hard coded into their personality. You can ask them nicely to stop, but they won't because they don't consider you a factor for their game experience at all. You are just some odd blue text that flashes across their screen.

that is the exact makeup of someone with ASPD, (antisocial personality disorder). It is a person who lacks empathy and would probably translate into their personality in real life.

    Antisocial Personality Disorder

A mental health disorder characterized by disregard for other people.
Those with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) may begin to show symptoms in childhood, but the condition can't be diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood.
Those with antisocial personality disorder tend to lie, break laws, act impulsively, and lack regard for their own safety or the safety of others. Symptoms may lessen with age.
Treatment may include talk therapy and support for affected family members.

When I find a partially looted chest, I do ensure it despawns. When my inventory caps on a chest, I will make sure to loot it fully, there's always something I can destroy in that scenario.

People like this have always existed in mmos and will always exist in mmos. Every game has its share of ***hats. I doubt that anyone who actually does this will take the time to give you a thoughtful answer. Try to laugh and move on.

It's still annoying to see a chest in the distance and waste your time running up to it. It's not all about the respawn timer. It's about getting trolled with a chest that's guaranteed to only have trash in it.

100% agree. I was actually going to make a post just like this one. It is so incredibly rude to leave junk items and thankfully most players do not.

You should be foreced to take all items from a chest and not be allowed to loot it if you dont have enough free inventory spaces.

Sure, but it's a lot less annoying than thinking that a partially emptied chest is blocking fresh ones from spawning.

Personally, I always fully loot chests and resource nodes, but I regularly leave Thieves Troves only partially emptied, and the reason is that I don't want to fill my inventory up with junk that will force me to go to a fence (or spend a bunch of time deleting stuff from my inventory).

Im one of thos partial looters.
I rarely open chests in zone, cos there is not really anything inside that i need.
But when i take ressources i wont take insects. They are just annoying and takr an inv spot. So i leave them

What level were the items left in the chest? Sometimes new players open chests and don’t realize they don’t despawn afterwards. If there was only junk left in the chests then that could be what happened. I’d like to believe people wouldn’t do this intentionally and it was more of “they didn’t know” and didn’t pick up the extras because of limited inventory space.

So your general approach is that since it's an inconvenience for everyone to take trash items. That your going to remove the good items. And leave garbage for others.

So instead of everyone getting a fair share of good/trash loot. Only you get good loot and everyone else gets your trash.

    VS

Just taking your items and letting the chest respawn. Them everyone gets a little good and a little trash.

Why play in a way that makes other people's gameplay less fun?

Looking at your other threads, there appear to be several aspects of this game that upset you. Most if them seem to involve the behavior of other players.

Yes, the issue of people leaving items in chests has come up, one or two (thousand) times before. https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/search?Search=Leave+trash+in+chests.

If you really think someone is leaving items in the chests to maliciously interfere with you, perhaps heading to a different part of the zone to avoid whoever it is would work.

Have you considered looking at crafted sets? Those have the bonus of being able to choose the specific traits you want. Law of Julianos, maybe mixed with Armor of the Seducer?

Like, I understand the frustration. But really it's just poor game design. Can't blame the players too much for not actively inconveniencing themselves for someone who may or may not come along.

I appreciate the two people who fessed up in this thread so far. I hope more will fess up.

So thank you for coming forward. I'd like to ask you a couple questions if you don't mind.

Do you realize that your actions cause a direct negative experience for others? If you do realize this, do you enjoy grieving other players in a legal way? Do you partially loot a chest specifically because you know others will be grieved? Does it increase your game fun when you can impede on the enjoyment of other people?

That would be awful, if it were an accurate description of how the game actually works, but it's not. The reality is that leaving a chest partially emptied gives the next person an opportunity to take your trash, without affecting their ability to get good loot at all.

Like I said earlier. Two types of people. Those that will inconvenience others by leaving things and those that inconvenience themselves and spend a bit of time cleaning out the chest for the next person. Once someone is made aware that these trash items bother others, any time they do it, they are knowingly causing inconvenience to others for the convenience of themselves. Whether or not they care about that inconvenience is another story and determines whether it's malicious or if they honestly just don't care.

I dont feel a need to be privy to posts brought up "thousands of times before" since I've only been here 3 months. I also don't feel any particular need to search forum post history to check on the quantity of times an issue has been brought up before I express my opinion. I'm glad ZOS runs the forums and poison the well fallacies aren't part of how they run them, which I'm grateful for. But thanks for your encouragement :)

Items left in chests don't do anything but give you free stuff. It's your own attitude that affects whether getting that free stuff is a good or bad thing.

I have autoloot on and hate filled bags, so I never leave behind anything automatically. But I don't care if I see a partially looted chest. More stuff for me.

Nobody is griefing you. They aren't doing anything to you or anyone else. They aren't responsible for catering to your personal tastes.

Hypothetical: John goes out and farm 10 nodes, and all 10 nodes have only worms. John is unhappy. By your logic, it's John's problem since John should be thankful he got some free stuff. John is the one with the problem, and the guy who left worms behind is the good guy. Yikes, lol.

Well... hello there... I'm a player who left things in chests. I thought I did it for a good reason. It was my first experience in ESO. I had no ESO+. I took only things I believed useful for me. I left other things... for other players. I thought: why destroying a good thing? Let it stay in a chest, let someone else use it! It took several months before came to this forum and learned out that chests should not be left like that
