Vampires Bane

So while allocating kill points - I chose Vampires Bane...and not reading what it really does.

Skill description
Blast an enemy with a charge of radiant heat, dealing 1161 Flame Damage, and an additional 3346 Flame Damage over 14 seconds. Upon activation you gain Major Prophecy, increasing your Spell Critical rating by 2629.(eso-skillbook)

it does very little damage. And only 1 target...(I now see the value of reading)

But the skill crit increase, running a Templar, what is a strategy to use this. Any thing offensive magicka based ability will get that bonus? If so, what should drop on my bar?

Or how does someone use this skill effectively?

Tanks,

Z

It'll function like Degeneration from the Mage's Guild skill line. You cast it for the buff that comes with it and the added DoT is a little icing on the cake to make the ability worthwhile. Sometimes I'll cast Degeneration on multiple foes at range to get several DoTs running and hopefully one will proc the magic damage status effect and I'll get some magicka back.

Vampire's Bane deals flame which means it'll proc the flame status effect, which comes with a nice additional DoT over a few seconds once procced. You basically wanna cast it to keep the Major Prophecy running and get some extra flame damage.

Also ESO skill book has all abilities scaled to how they'd be on a brand new character with no points slotted in anything. To boost the damage of this ability get more max magicka and spell damage.

It is not exactly like Degeneration because VB provides Major Prophecy & Minor Sorcery, while Degen gives you Major Sorcery, so if you are not using pots, you can use both skills.

Basically, this particular skill is used mainly as buff, and therefore VB is better than other morph because it last 14 sec, while other gives you only 10.

However, it is no so weak... i mean, ok, it lacks DD punch to be spammable like ricochet skull or crystal shard, but in total with DOTs it gives you more DMG than Destructive Touch (or Poison Arrow to compare with stamina builds). You just need to use it properly, with higher stats you can get around 1000 dmg per sec, so it is quite nice for a skill use just as opener & buff ;)

On a magplar you want a source of major prophecy ideally. It's the easy magplar way to get it.

magelight gives you this for free but has to be front bar, although the morphs have advantages for some situations.

treasure hunter set gives it you but you trade a skill slot for not having the best armour option.

spell potions cost gold but have no slot impact and it means juggling multiple potions on your quickslot if you suddenly need heals.

vampires bane costs magicka but does some minimal damage, can be backbar and also procs some useful sets like ilambris and I think burning spellweave.

On a stamina based templar where the prophecy bit isn't useful it's not really much use at all.

Too many toons not enough time

This ability is underwhelming for sure.

Even on a magPlar it's hard to justify this skill when you could have the +7% Magicka from simply slotting Inner Light instead.

In order to increase its appeal, the skill needs something that can compete with Inner Light. Simply being able to back-bar the ability doesn't meaningfully close the gap since it's still a damage loss.

It would also be nice to have this ability behave like Soul Trap and simply use highest stats. Then you could open up another morph for something entirely new. The base morph should also provide Major Savagery on-cast. It would be a nice gesture to stamPlars and it would potentially open up Stamina Jabs for a more interesting secondary effect.

I always take the Reflective Light morph.

And note that the minor buff goes to your whole group.

Yeah, that's true. If you don't wanna go for class skill, it is better to get Inner Light on front bar for massive bonus to magicka, but then you need to add some other Dawn's Wrath skill to get Minor Sorcery. Purifying Light works nice in this situation, although not some nice as stam morph for stamplars...

It's a very underwhelming skill (both morphs).

You take it, keep it until you get to skill line lvl 50 and then you drop it at the first respec possible...😁

If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.
