Maelstrom staff what is the two set bonus?

Well I finally got my maelstrom inferno staff and it dropped precise. Question, it states a two set bonus can be obtained. I read a post but now can't find it that stated the two set bonus is the staff itself, it counts as two. Is this true? The reason I ask is when equipped the second set item is greyed out instead of all white like when you add a piece to five piece sets.

2 handed weapons count as 2 piece set.

2h weapons are counted as 2 items in all sets.

you dont get the set effect if you arent equipping it.
for example you have MA staff on your front bar and BRP staff on your back bar. you dont get the set effect of MA staff if your currently on your back bar

True but to clarify, with the vma staff, the bonus will carry over as long as blockade is cast from the same bar as that the staff is equipped. So if you back bar the staff and back bar blockade, as long as blockade is active, you will get buffs to your front bar light attacks. That is why this staff is meta.

And yes. All 2 H weapons always count as 2 pieces towards whatever set they are part of. So a 5 piece set can be completed by a staff and 3 body pieces as an example.

Ok here is what the problem was, I've not seen this before. I couldn't get the two piece bonus to highlight no matter what I did. I had to equip the staff then actually use it as an attack and then it highlighted just fine. I tested that with my alternate staff and it wouldn't count as a two set bonus until I equipped and fired it. Something new or did I just overlook it in the past?

Even though it's equipped, are you actually on that bar and have the weapon out when you look at your inventory?

It never shows the bonus if you're on the other bar, as for the most part, the bonus either doesn't carry over or has to be instigated on that bar.

Yes, I made sure I'm on the right bar and can actually see the weapon style in front of me by going out of the menu screen and into the "real" world. Nothing I did would get the 2 piece bonus to highlight until I actually went out of the menu and fired it into a wall in my home. I tested it with my other stave and same result. I'm thinking it's a bug or something new with one of the latest patches but honestly I've never really paid attention to this prior as other staves are part of five set bonus and I never equipped just one stave all by itself before.
