Is ESO becoming the new NW?

The companion system among some other things are really starting to make me wonder if ESO is slowly becoming more like NW. There are so many similarities now. But let me stick with the companion system and cp models. The proposed companion system with the exception of being able to slot skills is oddly similar to the other game. Companion specific gear, leveling, low dps... all too familiar. After watching some online videos it doesn’t sound like the companions would be very helpful.

The new cp system is similar to the system the other game uses. Forcing you to to place points in something you likely won’t use or need to get to the ones you will use and need.

Both games released their revamps at the same time. Both systems essentially nerfed the players power.

Dark Elves or Drow?

I left the other game because of the changes they made (day 1 player there) and this game is starting to feel like that one did. I really hope that’s not the path we’re on.

Wait didn't single player TES game have companions? I fail to see how this makes them the same?

Nope. For starters Neverwinter is pay2win, or excuse me for using such language- pay to progress. *Adjusts monocle

You buy expensive keys to open boxes that contain op gear. Or you don't. Then you suck in any proper content like pvp. Or you grind forever... And then you still suck, because some dude in pvp spends 5 times your salary on his op armor.

Nobody likes nerfs people... But they happen in every online game. It's just a part of the balancing. Balancing which can be better or worse depending on many things. But if you leave a game as soon as some nerfs happen. I got some bad news for you...

Edit: Just google "Neverwinter Zen Market" and open the wiki page to check out its contents. Then compare it to the ESO cash shop. Then never complain about ESO again, because we have it goood in comparison to NW players.

I assume the OP specifically means Neverwinter the MMO, not Neverwinter Nights (which had companions, and a multiplayer mode, but I don't remember anything like CP) or any of the various other uses of the campaign setting which for some reason almost all insist on just being called Neverwinter.

I've never played the MMO so I can't comment on any similarities between the new CP system and whatever they use, but companions aren't unique to that game so I don't think adding them to ESO means it's copying NW any more than it's copying Skyrim or Guild Wars 1 or Darksun or any other game where you could recruit NPCs to help you. It's an idea as old as RPGs (so possibly it did start with DnD, but not Neverwinter) and there's been many, many variations over the years.

I'm sceptical of how useful companions will be, and I have concerns either way - if they're too weak they'll be useless to a lot of players making them a disappointing feature and may give players who are struggling for whatever reason the impression that there's no hope for them if they can't even complete stuff with a companion (not realising the companions aren't really helping). But if they're too strong they may replace human players in some groups, making it harder to find people to play with.

But having seen so many variations of the idea over the years I'm willing to wait and see how exactly they work. I'm not expecting much, or expecting to use them outside of their own quests, but I don't think it makes sense to assume they'll be just like any specific previous version of the idea.

We had that in Skyrim too.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Whole system runs essentially parallel with SWTOR companions.

As for single player games, don't know how to tell ya'll......but they are different beasts even if in the same franchise.

Well considering NW was originally a PVP MMORPG, then did a 180 degree pivot to a PVE MMORPG with some PVP elements, I would say your comparison of ESO and NW is accurate in that regard.

There's other games with Companion characters. SWtOR seems like a closer fit, considering that the "companions" in NW are more like pets or pokemon, and SWtOR is more story-rich & you can outfit the companions with regular gear & costumes.

NW, I did not put that with Neverwinter, I thought the OP meant New World.

I lasted a whole of 5 minutes in Neverwinter due to this alone. It really sets the tone of what is to come.

Yeah not many people equate NW with Neverwinter, the game really isn't on most western gamers radar.

Don’t talk about nerfs and balancing when it’s pretty clear they have no clue on how to do either of those things properly since every update the game gets flipped on its head and they don’t even commit to the changes they make.

Sorry, yeah, I meant Neverwinter. I’m a day 1 player of that game and left to play ESO more full time after NW reworked their crafting system. But this past year I’ve felt like ESO was slowly starting down the path NW has been on and that saddens me because I’ve grown to love ESO.

Looking at being able to obtain crown mounts with a new currency.
The combat and cp rework. (This is likely just a coincidence)
Companions aren’t new to Elder Scrolls or MMO’s but, specific companion gear I’ve only seen in NW. When they announced this I was hoping it would be more like how Dragon's Dogma did companions. Hands down one of my favorite companion systems in any game.

I do recall a certain table top game issue between the two companies but don’t remember the outcome. No need to rehash that either. Just wanted to note that this isn’t the first time of there being similarities between the two.

[snip] For the thread title, and the first mention in his paragraph... he should have spelled-out the entire name, so you wouldn't have to ask. Had he done that... I wouldn't have needed to come into this thread to see if he or someone else explained [snip]
