Honestly for myself I I prefer using keyboard + mouse
Usually Games that require a lot of mobility over precision, Like Dark Souls ou ESO Would make go for the Joystick, but for some reason I prefer to use the keyboard for

Maybe it's because It's easier to set the skills
Or maybe just because I got used

What about You, and why do you preffer, and why?

Keyboards have lots of buttons, gaming mice have lots of programmable buttons. Mice are faster for aiming.

When you say joystick I think of someone attempting to play ESO with a HOTAS though...

    Controller, hands down. (heh)

It's just about comfort and convenience for me. I like having it all in my hands, so I can lean back and relax. Or play standing up. Or whatever I want.

Sure do lament the absence of mouse clicks, though. Triggers are a poor poor replacement for the virtually instant *click* of even the cheapest mouse -- especially for light attack weaving. Mouse users have it 10x easier for weaving, no contest.

I would pay idiotic amounts of money for an Xbox controller that had actual factual mouse click buttons in place of the triggers. Even those short-travel switch gimmicks some controllers have come nowhere close to a real mouse click.

I set up a hot key on keyboard (F1) to toggle between keyboard and gamepad.

Can be annoying - especially as the gamepad ui isn’t as feature rich as normal version. Also (and as you’d expect) the toggle to keyboard and writing in chat isn’t seemless - but my choice to use gamepad so not complaining.

Practically gamepad works better for me as I sit on sofa with pc connected through tv.

I prefer a controller for gameplay and exploring. When it comes to inventory management and crafting, keyboard and mouse work much better. I just can't stand doing a rotation and moving at the same time on a keyboard. My left hand just isn't used to that anymore, I guess. As others have said, it's easier to sit back, relax, and play with a controller.

The biggest downside to using a controller in any elder scrolls game has always been the awful UI. It is 9000x better and easier to manage on KB and mouse. Other than that I don't really have a preference , I might use my controller during some long quest lines and chill on my bed when I don't need to type. It just feels counter productive using a controller in my PC chair lol

I admit idk how ppl can even play with gamepad.
Camera control is horrendous, its pretty slow as well, you are unable to easily do stuff you can with KB&M.
I dont say players who choose to use such an input device are terrible but they surely do gimp themselves.

ESO with controller is a great experience, I never liked to play it with Mouse & Keyboard (like other MMORPGs). ESOs combat is tailor made for console / controller gameplay.

I don't know, I've never played ESO with a controller so I'm not sure how I'd find it.

I've considered trying sometimes but since I play on PC and not through Steam I'd have to install 3rd party software to get the controller working, and I'd still have to use the keyboard for chat and would probably still use the mouse for menus, so it doesn't seem worth the hassle to try. It would probably also take some trial and error to get a setup I like.

It's nice that I have the choice though. And reading this thread I guess I'm lucky that I've never found either method difficult to use. I started gaming on a keyboard (no mouse, this was a ZX Spectrum which was keyboard only) and didn't play anything with a controller until later but I was still a kid at the time and didn't even think about the change.

Unlike console, PC has full control over the remapping of buttons beyond selecting a template option and addons that are supported in gamepad mode make the experience much more enjoyable. Even while in gamepad mode, your keyboard and mouse are still accessible; if I need to, I can switch off mid fight with no problems. I use a razer naga and most of my actions are also assigned to the 12-key thumbpad.

I do admit, the default button mapping on controller is atrocious, I don't see how console players deal with it :P

ESO is on ps4 and xbox where everyone is using a controller. So perhaps this poll is only aimed at PC users, otherwise the results would seem skewed by the prevalence of console players.

It seems to me that ESO is significantly easier on PC, given the added utility and add ons available that help manage every aspect of game play. Watching some content providers screens online and seeing the amount of help they get from prompts and trackers etc is quite an eye opener when you are a console player.

Also, while it is a taboo subject, it is the case that using macros on PC is incredibly easy (& I suspect more common than many wish to admit), a fairly standard programmable mouse can do it all for you. Press 1 click, and it can do your entire rotation, with timing built in to match global cooldowns etc. I do not play on PC and have never used a macros, but I have seen it being done.

Plug a USB keyboard in = easy :) You can literally pick up a USB keyboard for less than £5. I seem to recall mine was £2.50p, new.

But beyond that, it seems fairly obvious that PC players, who can use mouse and keyboard as standard, have significant advantages across a range of game play and content.

Completely agree and also worth pointing out that macros are not exclusive to pc - for the price of a semi decent gaming keyboard / mouse combo you can get programmable packs for console that achieve similar outcomes.

For me the biggest disadvantage of using a gamepad is the reduced sensitivity speed of looking around / aiming. Even with this sensitivity cranked up to maximum through in game settings it’s still a bit slower than keyboard and mouse.

I guess it’s more of an issue if you PVP a lot - which I don’t do often.

Edit: for clarity I’m a pc player using gamepad. The sensitivity issue for keyboard / mouse vs gamepad may not be an issue on console (idk).

I wouldn't even consider playing with controller. I actually have an Xbox controller that I link to my PC to sometimes play certain simpler games and havent used it in over a year now. K+M is just so much better from multiple aspects. Programmable side buttons on my mouse. Smoother combinations. Much easier to navigate UI. More precise. More options. Plus trying to type something with a controller literally takes 10 times longer than it does on K+M

I sometimes think the best option might be to use both, switching between them for different activities. But I think that could be annoying to do in practice. (Also using a controller with the PC doubles the risk of that controller going missing because someone leaves it in a weird place...but that might be ok if I use an Xbox 360 controller because for some reason we have loads of them.)

Alternatively maybe I should look into something like a keypad with an analogue thumb stick I can use for movement. I use the number pad for combat controls (skills, dodge, weapon swap, quick slots etc.) so it's not like I need a full keyboard to play ESO. A keypad with a thumb stick might be a good compromise. (And absolutely not an excuse to buy another gadget.)

I use to play games with a controller but it has been a couple of generations that i last really gamed with a controller. Controllers are to small for my hands. Sinking into a comfy chair or on the couch and gaming only entices one to spend hours upon hours to game as well and i prefer to keep my sessions to 1-2 hours max. I am past the time in my life when i could game for 4-6 hours at a time. I also have a lot more options with KB&M. I have my mouse set up to do all movements plus attack and block. I can still move with WSAD as well, so if i get tired of using the mouse for movement i can swap back to the KB for a bit seamlessly, which i often do when im riding, if i have been playing for a bit.

I use both, depending on the task, but 90% of the game I play on a controller. I don't know how people play m&k games for hours at a time. M&k makes my wrists hurt like hell within short order. I must be getting old 😕

I prefer controller, but only in an environment where everyone has to use a controller. (Good thing I'm on console) If I was back on PC, I'd definitely use mouse and keyboard. No way I'd want to put myself at a disadvantage.

In the past on PC, my most preferred setup was actually holding a controller in my left hand and using a mouse with my right hand. There's a number of games out there that would accept simultaneous input from mouse and gamepad, and when they did, I always used both at the same time. Being able to control your movement with an analog stick, whilst being able to look around / aim with a mouse, best of both worlds.
