Do you create and use your own builds, use pre-existing builds, or a combination of both?

So, the other day I got some heat from some guild members because I announced I use builds I find online. So, this conversation got me thinking to how many people create their own builds in comparison to those who use pre-made builds. Please include a short description of why you create your own or why you use existing builds.

I use pre-made builds (sometimes switching minor skills around) because outside gaming my life is very busy. Gaming is a hobby and I don't have the time to create and tweak builds while learning different crit percentages etc. I admire those that can and do but it's not for me. Using Alcast or Dottz builds works just fine for me and I'm perfectly ok with that.

I create and use my own builds
I create my own builds based on what seems fun for me, and what fits my character theme / concept. I have little to no use for meta builds, and personally have no interest in someone else making builds for me. The biggest aspect of fun for me is putting together my own themes and builds.

The only thing I used YouTube builds for was early on, just to see what job duties I would be expected to fulfill for group content. Otherwise, I will build my characters in my own way to fulfill that role.

I main a Breton Necro tank who is also a vampire with Crimson, Grave Guardian, and Lord Warden. My makes me a walking aura of curse and destruction for my enemies (Crimson, Angry Totem, Unnerving Graveyard), and an aura of absorption and healing for me and my allies (Crimson healing, Grave Guardian, Angry Totem, Enduring Undeath)

I have a Wood Elf stamina Nightblade with Aegis Caller, Unleashed, and Domihaus. My teleport strike procs 3 different effects - the AOE aegis, a DOT from Unleashed, and the damage boost from Domihaus.

I have a Wood Elf Warden tank, with Brands of Imperium, Combat Physician, and Chokethorn. The character was originally a healer that I converted to a tank, but still maintains some supplemental off-healing capabilities, as well as acts as a damage shield generator for myself and my allies.

I have an Argonian vampire Necro "frenzy bomber", that uses Sated Frenzy with Phoenix set to detonate and blow myself up into a massive AOE explosion, with a big burst heal and damage shield to go along with it.

My healers are probably my most "typical" and closest to anything resembling meta, one is a Dark Elf Sorc using Spell Power Cure / Jorvuld's / Symphony of Blades, the other is a High Elf Necro using Hollowfang / Worm's Raiment / Earthgore.

I will at least look at recommendations and try to understand the choices. I will try and probably level the skill so that I have it as a ready-to-go option if needed, but ultimately go with what feels right for me. :)

I play solo open world PvP on magblade (no, not a healer), there are very few good builds out there available because it's poop PvP class so 99% of a time I end up with my own setup.

I create and use my own builds
All my characters are my own builds... but this is with the caveat that I am by no means interested in making my builds competitive or high-end. I'm an RP player, so I tend to craft each character's skills and gear to best fit their personality/background/etc, not based on what would be most helpful in Trials. The fact that I enjoy puttering around my houses more than I enjoy running endgame content gives me a LOT of leeway to make the silliest, most inefficient, most fun-for-the-sake-of-fun builds possible.

That said, I don't think either way is superior. As you said, a lot of people are busy and/or don't get that much fulfillment out of building a character from scratch. And especially if someone is trying to be competitive, in either PvP or PvE? Building from scratch to hit the best combo possible is a LOT of research that you may not even be able to find the resources to do, even if you do have time. It's hard to keep track of what sets work for what, even without the occasional buffs and nerfs, as happened in the last patch. So yeah, if carefully crafting your character isn't fun in itself for you, there's no reason to do it when you can modify a build you find online.

    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

I tend to create my own, however my main build which I did set up ages ago has suddenly been appearing on websites. Perhaps it was made meta, I don't know. But I tend to still have a few differences to the meta of my main, like skills, weapons and so on.

In truth I play one character my alts are just glorified daily writ workers.

I generally recommend new players to use builds, but I encourage them to ask questions rather than blindly copy and paste. Eventually, they'll be able to give a reason for it. They can use those reasons to put their own builds together in the future. Or, hey, alternatively they *can't* find a reason for it and they make a change to the build for the better.

Once you've got it down yourself, making your own stuff is just plain funner.

I love cooking and enjoy searching for recipes that look good and get good ratings, and then I'll add my own twists or modifications. However, coming up with recipes totally on my own? Not really interested, because it requires a lot of trial and error that to me feels like wasted time. I'd rather start with something that I know has worked for others, and build on it from there.

It's the same for me in ESO. I enjoy researching pre-made builds as my starting point, and then changing them according to my preferences and playstyle. Some of my favorite builds are hybrids that evolved from "meta" builds somewhere else. It's a process that works well for me.

In other words, I'm grateful there are people who love theory crafting and diving into the minute details, because it means I don't have to bother with that and can just enjoy new builds while feeling confident I'm starting off with something viable.

I'm with you OP and I do have time if I wanted. Usually start with Alcast on major changes and tweak over time to suit my play. There are a few recommendations this patch I probably would never have considered, e.g. Deadly Strike on my stamplar, breaking up monster sets or not running any with two arena weapons, etc.

I will often look at builds online from people I believe have better game knowledge than I have. If say I'm starting a new toon of a class that I'm not used to, I may just carbon copy the build as I level. Once I get them up to 50 and see how it plays, I will often tweak it to make it mine.

For PVP, I use pre-existing builds for inspiration or as a jumping off point. But I also try my own builds out to varying success.

For PVE, I mostly use meta or slightly off meta builds, which results in matching or nearly matching most builds you find online. No point in losing damage or theory crafting in PVE imo, minus a few tweaks to fit my playstyle.

For those of you using AlcastHq's cp 2.0 build guides, is it better to max out the stats of the listed perks up to your current cp level, or take a bit of everything they have listed as recommended for your build? I'm currently cp 890 and have to make a decision.

I have a theme that I've tried to stick with for both my healer and tank. Admittedly, I research armor specs online and try to incorporate the best recommended set with the sets I want for my theme. I want to be effective in my roles, but I also want to be a little unique.

For the most part I do my own research and use my own designs. Some of these include proc sets however for the most part I only use sustain proc sets for performance while sometimes utilizing them for damage as well. It largely depends on the vision for the build which has always been separate from whatever the accepted meta is for that particular time because there is a unique vision for each character.

However, there is also nothing wrong with seeing what works for other players as well as leveraging existing resources from content creators such as Alcast. Especially with as much work as others have put into their builds, including the monetary resources as well as all the time required to get the gear itself, plus testing.

And its for this reason I think it's essential for players to be able to choose for themselves what works for them and to learn from using different sets. I think cutting proc sets out of the game as a whole does not really help anyone and really limits the community to using only a handful of useful set combinations as well as prevents those of us with the know-how from being able to compensate for class weaknesses, thus hindering our ability to use skills.

Otherwise why have crafting and why have different sets in the first place right? And before the 6 months are up that's what it will come down to, everyone running the same 2 or 3 setups.

I still selected, "combination of both" because I won't lie, I do watch the build videos. Sometimes I see an idea and implement something similar. Do I mimic an entire build, never.

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

    Pre-made PvE tank builds are

    64 into health
    Ebon Armory
    Battalion Defender
    Lord Warden
    1h+S & Lightning Staff

Its such a boring, low impact meta. You can be way more proactive and still clear harder content. You are almost entirely passive, aside from self sustain and lightning blockade.

I started out using that build and quickly realized how boring it was. I also realized that the meta is incredibly hyped up.

I have my own builds that I'm progressing through vet HM dungeons right now. I understand that it's more of a struggle than the passive meta builds, but I feel that as I get better as a player, I surpass performance expectations consistently.

I can also take all of my characters from dungeons into battlegrounds. Only major change is that I swap Leeching for Frozen Watcher on my warden.

    My NB build Emo Kid
    54 Health, 10 Stam
    Nightflame Head / Shoulder
    Crimson Twilight Body
    Drake's Rush Weapons + Jewels
    1h+S FB & Bow BB

My DK build, the Protein Stain
    54 health, 10 stam
    Grothdarr head / shoulder
    Yolnahkriin Body
    Hiti's Hearth weapons + Jewels
    1h+S & 1h+S

    My Warden - Iceberg Lettuce
    34 Health, 30 Magicka
    Earthgore head & shoulders
Leeching Plate body (Frozen Watcher in PvP)
    Winter's Respite Weapons & Jewels
    Ice Staff + Ice Staff

I feel like each of my 3 guys play completely unique to one another and bring their own strengths and weaknesses and I'm never bored queueing up for stuff.

All three can deal great overland damage, have high sustain, decent mobility, and extremely unique feeling.

I'm probably going to change up my DK from 1h+S x2 and give him a maul on the backbar, and maybe swap him to Infernal Guardian since with Brawler + Igneous Shields he should get the damage proc often enough that it isn't trash. I'm also considering swapping out Yol for either Imperium or Seventh Legion. I'm leaning towards 7th legion because I think he's got enough shielding potential as is.

There's usually a reason that someone arrived at any given conclusion. I do not automatically discard the information simply because I may not like the source. I think it's more of an issue when they're followed blindly, but as long as it works for people, who am I to say it's wrong?

    It's a game, have fun.

I use pre-existing builds (YouTube, streamers, friends, etc.)
Why would i bother? There is no plagiarism in gaming.

I create and use my own builds
I make my own stuff. Now I have a complete set of leveled crafters, so its not something that is hard for me to do.

I do take advice and have watched a few vids, but mostly I wing it. Now I use the internet to answer any questions I might have and go from there. As I have a complete list, well hopefully, of all the Crafting Stations and can take my people anywhere I want, I can produce complete coordinated sets of whatever I think is best for any particular char.

As I can make not only the Clothing, Armour and Weapons, but a also set of Enchants for any particular set, any Potions I might want and of course any Food or Drink I might need, I hardly need the crap I can pick up. ;)

I'll use pre existing builds as a base and make adjustments for my play style and armor choices.

I think about concepts and theory craft. Once I land on an idea that seems viable and I like I look up guides to existing builds to see what is proven to be good. I don't usually use everything they use, but I do take notes and apply what I've learned.

Both bc theorycrafting is fun, and I like to see if I can improve by checking what others have made.

I make my own builds. I really don't like copying others, but I will take tips and notes from other players/builds.
That one khajiit obsessed with werewolf behemoth and vampire lord. Lady Thorn is bae, dont @ me.
    Werewolf behemoth=vampire lord>blood scion>werewolf>vampire.

I get inspiration from online builds, and then tweak them a lot to my preferences.

This. What good is the mathematically best build if you can't handle it?

Beside that I absolutely miss the nerves to farm vet trials for the few pve content I do in between.

I use guides which are always informative as to which skills are performers and which are useless after major patches, but I still come up with my own builds. CP 2.0 however has killed several of them because I tend to build for versatility and CP 2.0 is more about funneling into meta roles.

This, I don't really understand the new CP system so here I mostly copy, with the benefit that if I get to stuff I really don't bother with I just put in less points and go down the list, much the same as I did with the old CP system.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
