Campfire Memento

So, as a RPer, I often... even usually stop at night time and "camp" until morning... so when I saw this memento was available I grabbed it right away. However, while I love it, I do have one request.

Could we get this to be persistent until we leave it? I mean, it doesn't last all night. It would be better if I could place it, then lie down beside it, or sit beside it, or whatever... until morning, or until I move away from it. Perhaps have it remain in place until we move a certain distance away from it?

It would be nice.

On paper, it is a nice idea that I would fully support, especially as an RPer, myself. It always annoyed me how little time the campfires lasted in WoW while trying to RP at camp with my friends and other RPers.

That being said, as with most good things in the world... We can't have it because of idiots.

If you had the measures implemented above, I can guarantee that idiots will do everything they can to grief with it, and ultimately make it more a hassle than a boon for people. Never underestimate the ability of these people to turn something innocent into a tool to harass others.

Not sure how one would grief with it... especially if the thing goes away if THEY do. Most griefers I know have very short attention spans.

Sadly, the majority of griefers I've had the misfortune of dealing with have very long attention spans. Off the top of my head, there is the old classic of putting the overt and unsubtle visual effect on top of other people. When trying to RP, it's favoured tactic for people looking to disrupt it. Then the RPer is forced to either move (And then have it be reapplied as soon as the griefer is able), or have to continue RPing while their character has all the appearance of being burned. Or relocate entirely. Either way, the RP has become a lot more difficult.

That's one example that specifically targets people just trying to be social.

In other contexts? Well, lighting effects emit glows. Imagine having to try adjusting the colours on an outfit, but being unable to properly do so because the lighting is completely thrown off by a campfire on the outfit table.

Now imagine groups of people deciding to do this sort of thing in sync to really be problematic. Those are just a couple of the ones off the top of my head. Griefers can be much more creative.

Again, I would like to reiterate that I would absolutely love to have nice long-lasting campfires... But people suck.

Maybe in towns and other players where it could be used to grief it would have the use time it has now but out of towns and not near crafting stations (say 100 meters) it would stay as long as you do. I'm not an RPer but that would surely keep you guys happy and not allow the griefing (or masively minimise it as I'm sure some will find a small way to grief you RPer's with it). Just my 2p

It seems to me they could still do all of that as it is...

Besides, we can't NOT do things in the game because someone might abuse it. With that philosophy, we wouldn't have a game at all.

Griefers already have much more effective ways to grief RPers. I'd also love the campfire to have a longer duration.

Even when I'm not RPing, it's nice to have a fire to sit by while waiting for a boss to spawn. Having to relight the fire every minute or so is a touch annoying.

If they believe they're annoying you, they will be very persistent. They have no problem wasting their own time if they're wasting yours.

I really like how, when I'm waiting for a boss for example, any dance emote I decide to do will keep going as long as I don't start walking. I can move my camera view around and see what's going on around me and the dance keeps going. Emotes and mementos are pretty similar. ZOS is probably able to set up the campfire that way without much effort. I'm not sure they have the capability of letting it persist if you lay down or walk a few steps away. But moving your camera view while the campfire burns is probably not possible. Unfortunately, there are people who will go to great lengths to ruin an experience for as many people as possible because "They don't believe." As was said above, people suck.

Not really, since I doubt I'd ever use it in a house. It's a CAMP fire, after all.

I don't know, I don't see people spamming the OTHER kinds of mementos that remain active for a time... Why would the campfire be any different?

If any of the mementos were to last for a significant amount of time. Like the 3 or 4 hours that night time occurs. Players would definitely be spamming them for the luls.

Not if they disappeared when the player moved away from them. I can't imagine anyone would want to stand around that long, just to be annoying. As I say, in my experience, there's a short attention span there, they want that instant gratification, and wouldn't likely want to stand around all night.

I love the new camp fire memento, a player I was randomly 2 manning dungeons with last night put one down as we chilled for a moment. It was just really nice, rather than standing there idle, we were relaxing by a fire together, lovely bit of immersion.

I immediately thought wow, this must be wonderful for role players.

Ive no idea how to get it, I assume its purchasable for an astronomical fee in crown store?

Yeah persistent until it is removed so it could be placed on a crafting table for a really long time. Bears and now campfires. Us crafters just can't catch a break. :(

Easy solution to this, and indeed the pets getting in the way issue... is just create a zone around crafting stations of every kind, that automatically removes skill based pets, non combat pets and mementos, upon entering the area. We already have this in place for mounts dont we, there are various areas in game where you are automatically dismounted, its basically the same concept and I have no idea why Zos has not already implemented this, given the annoyance and frustration pets flapping about in your face has, and not just for crafters. Outfit stations as well etc.

Yeah, I'd love for the campfire to last longer. At least 5 minutes would be ok if we can't have it on forever. Yesterday I farmed the Queen Consort and I had to activate the campfire over and over again. It was pretty chill with other players joining in, it would be even nicer if I didn't have to stand up every minute to light the campfie again. But I doubt it'll be changed. ZoS has made it clear that they don't change things once they are released unless they're bugged. Look at Mire drum for example.

Longer time on it would be awesome, could create a radius that only allows for one campfire at a time in a 50m radius - and five meters no-go zone at craftstations to grief the griefers?
