I play both male and female characters. I just get ideas for their back stories and then create them accordingly. Some happen to be male, others female. There are no special reasons. My main is the same character I play since TES3, by the way.

I played as same gender so far but it got boring, I want to mix up things a bit

I will make male characters, I want to fight with a handsome/fiercesome warrior ;)

I've created and played characters of both genders. That said, the experience has taught me that I'm not entirely comfortable interacting with other players when my character is a different gender from myself.

Not to get all high horse-y here, but I genuinely [snip people who can only enjoy characters that are the same gender as themselves. Seems like they're just missing out on worlds of interesting stories and possibilities.

My question is, "If you only play characters that match your gender... why?"

(Not trying to look down on anyone here, [snpi] I'm genuinely curious why some people get stuck on only matching-sex game protagonists.)

I think the same for one-race players

Diversity is more fun and not being stuck with one race :)

Tried different gender but didn't feel the same. I bought appearance change token and made it the same gender.

To answer question because I didn't fit in the suit of the character. So it lacked immersion for me.

As a male I only play female characters. I never really like the look of males in any game, and females always have more customization options before they start looking weird. Not sure why this is.

Females are visually much better looking as well!

For me the choice of gender in a game has nothing to do with the fantasy, reallife, sexuality, or anything else.

I play only girls. I have ever since I started Oblivion in 2006. All males in that game looked like potatoes, whatever I did.
And it stuck throughout all Elder Scrolls Games since then.

I have a lot more of mine than of the other. Not sure why, but I like the immersion angle mentioned above. I think that is it. yes

I dislike playing a gender other than my own so much, that I refuse to even try games like The Witcher and Red Dead Redemption, even though I am very much drawn to them :(

I make both. Sometimes I make characters based on actual fictional characters. Sometimes I'll make a brutal orc dude. Sometimes I'll make a hot elf chick. It's whatever.

I don't roleplay at all. In D&D I played a male dwarf once and it was interesting, although not my usual there either. Video games are different to me, my character is just a tool for me to listen to someone else's story and a lot of them (single player) make me play a guy anyway. Given a choice I'll always create a same gender character.

    This.
My characters are neither me, nor who I'd like to be nor who I'd like to be with. if I were anything like my characters, I wouldn't spend my time playing computer games. The difference gender makes is negligible in comparsion.

When I make a new character I think about who they are, their race and gender are part of their identity, not mine.

I go for 100% immersion so I want to play as myself. Also, since I'm gay, I have even less motivation to play as a different gender (like, I'm aware some heterosexual people prefer playing different gender bc it's aesthetically pleasing).

One day, some girl game graphic designer taught me at the office.

"Hey!! lesson. If you find sexy looking young female
player at the MMO field, then player must be male. And...
If you find fine looking beautiful young male player, then player must be woman.
    It's a common sense."

    "You sure?"

    "I don't know. But it's usual."
    My playing time Mon-Friday UTC13:00-16:00 [PC-NA] CP over2000 now.
I'm Tank and Healer main player.

After playing same-gendered characters in MMOs since 2009 I created my first different gendered character a week ago. I am still feeling it out, so I am going with my historical choice for the poll.

It has felt like a pretty odd experience so far but I have learned a lot in questioning why it has felt weird to me.

Of course picking up a couple of whispers from people hitting on my character (for the first time ever) hasn't helped the feeling of weirdness...

It started out as just way to play female protagonists when I was young. Games that had a set protagonist whose appearance you couldn't really alter were generally always male. So if I wanted to play a female character, I could generally only do that in games where you created protagonists. There were some exceptions like Tomb Raider, or games where you were a named character but got to pick their gender like Dragon Age. But generally speaking, if it was a named character helming a non-ensemble game, it was a dude. And I'm not a dude, and wanted to sometimes play as a character like me.

Now there are more and more female protagonists kicking butt and taking names. And those women are increasingly from a diverse variety of backgrounds. I have even played a biracial woman with a skin tone close to my own who's also an army brat, which I thought was too specific to ever see reflected in a game. And yet, in Overwatch I can rain justice from above using her.

But the tendency to play rpgs as characters that are more reflective of what I look like still persists. It's basically habit at this point. Comfort food.

I'm glad things are way better out there now for the younger generation. I think a lot of people like putting a small piece of themselves into rpg characters. But it's cool that there are more choices out there now.

And hey, I still love me some male named protagonists. Nathan Drake for example is still one of the best protagonists out there to me. It's not a problem nor has it ever been one to play one. It's just nice to have more variety now. Tis the spice of life, after all
