Confused about how Motifs/collections actually work...

Returning player and trying to catch up on all of these systems (the Archeology minigame is a lot of fun!) My question is, I see a lot of motifs in the crown store, but is this all of the armor styles that can be crafted/worn? Or are there motifs that can only be obtained by actually playing the game (dungeons etc.)

Also, super confused about the difference between the outfit system (transmog) and the collections system. Just so I understand, the outfits go over your armor so they're essentially 100% cosmetic but the set collections are the actual armor styles that you can craft? So if something is missing it means you can't craft it or?

    1. All motifs (with the exception of 3 specific crown store exclusives) are available in-game.
    2. Outfit system is purely cosmetic
    3. Set Collection allows you to reconstruct any item you've already obtained in game. If it's missing, it means you haven't unlocked that item yet.
Tenacious Dreamer - Hurricane Herald - Godslayer - Dawnbringer - Gryphon Heart - Tick Tock Tormenter - Immortal Redeemer - Dro-m'Athra Destroyer
The Unchained - Oathsworn - Bedlam's Disciple - Temporal Tempest - Curator's Champion - Fist of Tava - Invader's Bane - Land, Air, and Sea Supremacy - Zero Regrets - Battlespire's Best - Bastion Breaker - Ardent Bibliophile - Subterranean Smasher - Bane of Thorns - True Genius - In Defiance of Death - No Rest for the Wicked - Nature's Wrath - Undying Endurance - Relentless Raider - Depths Defier - Apex Predator - Pure Lunacy - Mountain God - Leave No Bone Unbroken - CoS/RoM/BF/FH Challenger

Thanks! Is there a list of motifs that are in-game but not purchasable via crown currency and can only be obtained by playing the game?

The collections system is new. It represents all the armour sets in the game, not the style of the armours themselves. The sets are earned by playing the content. Some are drops from overland, some from dungeons, others from trials. You add pieces to the collection by binding each piece (equip it) before you destroy it. The more pieces in a set you collect, the cheaper it will be to reconstruct it at a Transmutation station, and if you choose to keep a given piece it will also be cheaper to transmute it to a different trait if you want to do that. The cost is in transmute stones, which you will earn by doing things like dailies.

Motifs refer to a style of armour or weapon, and all are available in the game. Some are earned during events, some by drops, some you can loot from crates or chests across the world. Some also become available from the crown store for real money, which can get stupid pricey so I would just play the game to get the ones you want unless you have a ton of crowns to burn.

Outfits are as you said, just cosmetic. You can go to an outfit station and pay some gold to change the style of your armour which will always be visible, no matter if you change armours. The more outfit slots you have the more "looks" you can change into. There are also outfits, which you simply active from the appearance menu (under "U") and this will override the look of your armour as well. Once you deactivate it, your armour will show again.

Binding gear is not the only way to get gear into your collections. If you want to keep the gear, bind it. If you do not want the gear, deconstruct it. Deconstructing will also add gear to your collections.

To craft a piece of gear in a particular style the motif needs to be known by the character doing the crafting. To use a piece of a particular style in an outfit at least one character on the account needs to know the motif for that piece and style.

Example: If character A knows the Dwemer style, they can craft pieces in that style. Character B, who does not know the motif, can use the Dwemer style in an outfit.

The collection pieces are non-crafted set pieces obtained in-game. Some may be in a style that corresponds to a particular motif but knowledge of that motif is not needed to craft the collection pieces. Instead, transmute crystals and having the desired item in the collections is all that is needed.

@icapital If you are on PC you can use TraitBuddy addon. Not only does it show trait knowledge for each character but also has a listing of all motifs and crafted sets.

    List: https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Crafting_Motifs

The three Crown Store motifs are Grim Harlequin, Tsaesci, and Stahlrim Frostcaster.
