A thought on the Companions

I haven't heard or maybe I missed it, will the companions have a static level or will we have the opportunity to level up our companions, assign gear to them? My understanding is, they're mostly a mule that has a quest and who will help when it comes to battles in PvE land.

As far as I know nobody has this information yet in the playerbase, if they do then I don't.
