This quest has quite obviously been bugged ever since the game was released and either doesn't advance at all or completely randomly.

I've got it today and it does advance with my kills or group kills.

On the other hand, the Wrath of Whitestrake achievement that counts kills, that one's acting oddly, requiring you to deal most (if not all) of the damage, which is wrong.

what kind of bug are you seeing @Octopuss ?

lord knows i've run in to just about every glitch or bug imaginable over the last five years or so, can't recall though a bug related to the 40 player quest...

For awhile, it required you actually dealt the killing blow. So, if you had Mage's Wrath, it was really easy to "steal," kills for the quest. Conversely, if you didn't run an execute, and someone else did, it could be infuriating, because it would never seem to tick.

Not 100% sure, but I think it required personal progress for a long time. It got moved over to group progress later. This was in contrast to the kill 20 <class> quests, which (AFIAK) always updated based on group kills, and (I think) would tick up based on assists, not just direct kills.

So, probably bugged, but not broken.

The 40 player quest pretty much works properly when going alone. As long as you are not grouped with other players, if you damage en enemy and then they die, you get credit for the quest.

But once you group with other players, it definitely starts acting weird and not counting kills the same way. If I am running with a group, I usually drop that quest. If I am running by myself, I keep it.

oh okay, i very rarely ever group, so that may be why i haven't seen this bug...

It hasn’t been bugged since the release of the game, as the conquest board wasn’t introduced until 2018.

That said, the board and kill 40 in particular have been bugged since then:

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/445634/kill-40-players-conquest-still-not-working-as-it-should

They've known about this for well over 2 years. If they had wanted to fix it, they've had plenty of time. They either can't or don't want to devote the resources to doing so.

The quest is completely unreliable when done near other group members. (If you're not in the same vicinity as your group members, it works fine, but that mostly defeats the purpose of being in a group in the first place.) It has been tested in group with killing blows, most damage, least damage, first damage, last damage... you name it. There is no reliable way to ensure a kill is counted when near your group members.

The few times I have been in a group, and it was usually a large group (you know, back when it was more than 12 players), I could not get any credit for player kills. I wasn’t always near other group members.

When I play solo I don’t have any problems at all with the quest.

I know that in PvE when you are in a group everyone usually gets credit when it comes to completing quest objectives, so there might be some overly aggressive checks for the “kill 40 players” quest to make sure that doesn’t happen and makes it almost impossible to obtain.

No sure what the problem is I often get credit for kills I didn't even participate in from group members. I would say the issue might be lag (goddess knows I could write pages of issues resulting from the crippling lag) is it at all possible that op is not actually doing damage to enemy because of lag?

No, I can personally confirm that in a group of two with both of us damaging the same enemy without question, neither person might get credit. Or one might, or the other, but almost certainly not both. After going through this often enough, my groupmate and I stayed away from each other and it worked more regularly.

Comparing this quest to kill 20, especially when I’ve had both at the same time, I can say the kill 20 fills much faster and more regularly than kill 40. They should work the same way.

I don't know how it counts the kills. For me, I use caltrops a lot, and I mean a lot, and even in a full group the kill counts goes up fairly quickly. It could be that I'm tagging many folks, or maybe it is something else. I don't know. Other AOE's don't seem to work as well.

I don't PVP as often anymore but I thought the count was character specific meaning that it doesn't count if you have already killed that player before. 40 players was 40 players not just 40 kills. It sometimes took me a few days to complete this quest which is why i typically drop it as soon as i pick it up now.

If this is the case, though, there are a couple of concerns:

    1) why doesn’t it say “unique” players, like the 9 resources quest says “unique resources”?

    2) why does the kill 20 players quest — phrased exactly the same as the kill 40 one — go up faster than the kill 40 tracker when you have both at the same time? These quests clearly count differently for some reason.

Multiple kills on the same player(s) will count for kill quests (as long as the quest itself is counting kills properly). I've had a few entertaining not-really-sieges where defenders would keep respawning at their outpost and come back outside to get killed over and over. It was nice of them to keep feeding my quest. :D

I think some folks in this thread aren't making the distinction between the bounty board "kill 20 players" and the conquest board "kill 40 players" quests. The former can be done via group kills even if you're not doing any damage. The latter tends not to register kills when you're in a group. In both cases you can simply damage a player without needing to get the killing blow yourself (again, assuming it's registering properly).

Wrath of the Whitestrake requires 50 killing blows, it just doesn't say so.

Definitely this. And I can also confirm the difference between 20 and 40 kills quests; kill 20 player advances way faster than 40. Usually even so that when 20 is completed the 40 kills quest might not have more than one or two kills, or even zero. I almost always run in a group of 3-6 people.

You have to play solo for this to work as intended. It's been bugged from day 1, and has been grossly ignored by Zenimax.
