Why don't we recognise each other?

Hi there,

A part of the game I've always loved is when we meet npc again and they recognise us and we can ask the a question like "Ohh how have you been since I saved your life" or something like that.

In this case Lyris Titanborn doesn't recognise me at all. (I've just started West Skyrim btw) Also House Ravenwatch, my character asks "Whats that?" even though I've dealt with them so many times over the course of my characters adventures.

I'm just wondering is this happening to others? Is it a bug perhaps or what? I mean Lyris and I have done so much together and she's talking like it the first time we've met.

I really hope its not permanent as even though its just a simple thing it really makes my character feel real and like she has a history in this world. I love talking to characters I've met before and having a simple little chat about past experiences is very cool.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience?

Thank you

Sometimes recognise you but the dialogue where they do is buried several levels deep into the conversation. I remember this happening with Verandis at the start of Markarth, when I had to exhaust about 3 other dialogue branches before I got the option to ask about what happened to him after Rivenspire.

I think what also may be happening here is a conflict between immersiveness and exposition. They probably think that players might have forgotten what House Ravenwatch is, and so throw in the "What's that?" option just in case. I suppose nothing forces you to click on it, but ...

    Thanks Adriant1978

I just hope they don't take these little parts out the game. As I said it just makes the game and my character feel more real and immersive.

Remember that due to the open nature of the game quests can be done in any order. While you may be doing a quest chronologically others may be doing them out of order. As such conditional language and speech files needs to be added to old content in order to make it coherent the way you say. Consider the work needed to done in order to add these touches: coding, voice acting and recording, writing, etc. and that to retroactively add it to some small location a player may not experience is frankly a waste of time and resources.

All long-term relationships go through ups and downs. Lyris still loves you it’s just that half-giants are sometimes fickle. Buy her an Ale and talk about killing dragons but try not to bring up Sai.

Many NPCs do recognize your character. Or specifically recognize past quests your character completed. This only seems to work in chronological publish order of the content, otherwise they'd have to update dialog for old areas.

The recognition is minor. It's maybe slight dialog differences from the NPC or new/different dialog choices from the player etc.

The majority of the NPC's quest dialog is neutral. Other than a one-liner now and again, it's down to business and the same quest dialog is given to your character as any other.

I only vaguely remember but Lyris in Western Skyrim appeared to differentiate my newly created character from one that did other stuff with her. Stuff like 'hey friend' instead of 'you there' for the very start of dialog etc.

I did the Icereach dungeon with one character which is a kind of prequel to W.Skyrim, and I remember she mentioned it in passing. Or maybe it was my dialog choice that was similar to 'Oh like what happened at Icereach?'

It happens the other way too... my wife's first character went straight to Summerset, ran into Razum Dar, and he started yapping away at her like they'd met before. She had no idea who he was.

I guess it's part of the problem with not starting people in their faction zones any more. It's easier to run into Lyris in the open world than it is to find the Harborage now, so the whole thing ends up being done backwards and new players have no idea what's happening or why they should care about any of it.

"Hey, aren't you that guy? You look like that guy. I mean, you're wearing a completely different set of armor, and your face is completely covered up by your helm, and you're riding a different mount, running around with a different pet, and wielding a different weapon, but from your muffled voice and general height and what little body language can still be seen through your suit of armor, I'm pretty sure you're that guy. You're totally that guy!"

They probably tuned it down since during summerset the khajit James bond was all like "we meet again" with every single character, those that didn't do previous quests as well (including lvl 3 new characters, I remember people complaining)

    OP
The quest order is a bit broken especially since they started putting people in the starter area for new zones on sale, rather than start them in their alliance in the main quest line.

If you want to meet Lyris in order of her memory, (For some of us, it's even weirder than her just not recognizing our character but 'spoilers sweetie'.) If you want to understand the reason for a lot of what you encounter in the new DLC's, or you want to meet the hooded figure to start the main quest, in the correct area for your alliance, here is the thread for you!.

NPCs get hit in the head a lot, so they get forgetful.

Tharn, in the prequel to Summerset does make reference to having gone with you to Grahtwood dungeon previously, IF you already completed that part of the main quest.

Thats the only one I ever noticed.

True. There don't seem to be many (if any) showers, bath houses, or laundromats in ESO, just lots of sea water, lake water, swamp water, and hot lava that we can go swimming in. Lots of ways to get sweaty and stinky, not to mention getting coated in the blood and gore of our enemies. Not so many (visible) ways to get cleaned up and pleasantly-scented afterward.

Or maybe our familiar smell is actually our favorite-- and distinctive-- perfume or cologne?

But this has always been a bit of a joke in TES and other RPG games. "Oh, it's you!" Despite the fact that we just removed all of our gear and replaced it with some menacing-looking Daedric armor. ;)

Perfume was actually used in real life at times, where people tend to wash themselves just rarely - especially in the baroque and renaissance era - eventually the citizen of Tamriel are more natural folks, washing themselves in rivers or troves not needing any artificial smells or even not liking them at all. It is not natural to smell like a freaking flower as a human being.

She does, plus she is a "Cold-blooded Nord" Highly unlikely to sympathize or get emotional. She said familar face, you have not payed attention well. What do you expect from Half-Giant Iron clad warrior hot princess that slew thousands ,kiss, hug? You are lucky she was not meaner

There are instances, also why would she reflect on past how you been? Boring convo. Hi, how are you etc, they had to focus on expansion content rather.

I've played Western Skyrim with a character who has done the main quest and am currently doing it on one who hasn. Lyris' dialogue is significantly different if you haven't, she's far more standoffish and cold. I know she isn't exactly overly jovial if you have, but she is significantly warmer and there's a difference in what she calls you. Partner if you've done the main quest but not if you haven't.

Lyris didn't recognize me either. My first playthrough of Western Skyrim was with an old toon that already had Cadwell's Gold. So I thought maybe the mix up of realties wrecked the dialogue chain, but I recently completed the main quest line on a new toon and the same thing happened.

They recognize you but the dialogue is just poorly written, and not as neutral as they tried to make it.

And that's compounded by them giving you a dialogue option to act clueless to who they are, in case you have forgotten.

For example she has different greetings depending on her familiarity
