If you look at each of those enchantments it tells you what the damage is.

Short answer, shock. The absorb does less damage since it also gives back magicka.

If someone changed to the shock enchant then it would have been to increase damage. The absorb enchant is common with drop weapons.

Is there a secret answer C? Fire staff with Fire enchant is generally your best option for pure DPS in the vast majority of group settings.

A shock enchant certainly does more raw damage than an absorb magic enchant. The tool tip is all you need to see that.

Now in practice, it might not be so black and white. If you cant sustain your rotation with the shock enchant and need to heavy attack or do other things for sustain, then you very well might do more total DPS with the absorb magic enchant if it allows you to sustain, and it very well might. They are certainly a very useful option when solo or perhaps when your support is not all that great in group. The raw damage difference between shock and absorb magic aint all that much. It gets a bit more complicated when you talk about secondary effects from elemental weapons for proc'ing sets, off balance, and that sort of thing.

That is not what they were wondering or asking about. It was specifically about the enchants as they were wondering why someone changed enchants.

Lightning staffs do far more AOE damage. Fire staffs do more single target

This is why I run both for 4 man and solo content, but optimized trial groups is double inferno staff all the way. I swap my maelstrom staves, front bar is always inferno.
