Linux/Lutris - Launcher Manifest Error, cannot download

I had the greatest idea ever to update the wine version eso was using. Now I broke it so bad that I tried reinstalling the game, but I cannot get beyond PatchManifestError, download failed. I did install the thawte certificates as anchors, tried to add them in wine's control panel, no change. I want to play eso again tomorrow..... baha never touch anything that runs.

Do you have any idea how to get it back working?

How could the launcher be working just alright before if there are issues with the certificates?

Please help me Im really unhappy xD.

Try steam forums. Likely you are out of space. This is why I use steam and not otter

Delete everything and use the lutris installer

Hi, thanx for taking time to answer. I am using the stand-alone version of the game (without steam), I installed it through lutris. I was playing the game using this combo for some month now, daily, without issues. So its a bit surprising that the launcher stopped working at all. Oh well I shouldn't have touched it, but anyways..

I got 300 GB free on the drive I install to, got no steam (does steam support installation under Linux on its own?).

Also I tried to state the issue on Reddit and the Lutris page, steam is not really an option, or can I post there on games not in my library? Never engaged in any discussion there.

As far as I can conclude the certificates that are mentioned at the lutris page for ESO are needed by the launcher to download and decrypt files. Those certificates are not trusted and installed by default anymore on any current Linux as far as I could tell (but the fact the Launcher worked just fine before without those certificates leads to me believing they cannot be the issue, or that any older wine version had a work-around for them that got removed).

For the time being I can use an Windows install just for ESO, but I really do not want to use Windows, so I hope someone has an idea. If you or anybody else needs specific information please tell me and I will post it.

Using Arch Linux btw. I consider myself capable of making things work under it to my liking, but this issue is one I cannot solve by myself.

Ow well I found the older, working version of wine.

Wine lutris-5.6-2 does not throw errors.

I'll try to get word to the wine people, they might care.

Btw I use arch also. But I am not very familiar with the otter. I use steam with steam play that automates the install. I think I’m on proton 5.11 or there abouts. Steam manages it all very well and I never have to think about it. Plus any game controller I wish to use just works with steam which I have not found to be true with widows or the otter.


And fwiw. Arch really isn’t hard to install for gnome or plasma desktops. Trying installing it for a window manager like open box or i3 and then you have to configure lightdm or something makes it a smidge harder. I’ve used gentoo which is harder still to install but still not so brag worthy really. The real challenge in Linux is to go for Linux from scratch and beyond Linux from scratch. Then you’ve got some chops.

I was hit with this bug a few months ago and filed a bug report here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/727262

The gist is whatever distro you use, they updated the ca-certificates package from mozilla that removed or blacklisted some certs, one of witch is "thawte Primary Root CA". Details are in the bug report.

I would be cautious putting those certificates back - they were pulled because they were considered unsafe. If you put them back generally then you are asking for trouble, because they'll be accepted by everything not just the game download.

Nothing should be using those old roots of trust, it's quite alarming that something still is. If it was in a corporate/business environment it would have been banned on the spot. Sounds like a reason to use steam instead!

Steam play it just works btw but I've not looked to see if Zenimax use the old cert still. I'll wait until the deal is closed and report it to Microsoft security at that point if they do.

I am using Steam. Bought the game a few years ago on Steam.
