Necropotence staff vs Mother’s Sorrow

Hello again

I’ve searched the web but I can’t find a comparison between these 2 staffs. I’m a CP 467 magsorc 1pet PvE only. I have 5 pieces of Necropotence and 7 pieces of Mother’s Sorrow.

What I have now;

Infernal Staff of a Mother’s Sorrow (gold)

Charged

Deals 3319 Shock Damage (although I’ve never seen the use of shock except for the animation on the staff handle).

Proposed:

Lightning Staff of Necropotence (gold)

Infused

3112 magic damage and restores 461 magicka

$100,000

What do you think about the Necropotence staff?

My main hand backup is a purple Argonian Muck Minder of Mother’s Sorrow

Infused

Glyph to increase weapon damage by 435 for 5 seconds

Please help me decide if it’s worth it.

Thanks!

No, Necropotence was known for being pet build set because pet damage scales to max magicka but they've changed it to scale to both spell dmg and max magicka. You also only run one pet so you won't even be utilizing the Necro optimally.

Mother's Sorrow offers a butt load of crit bonus which will help your DPS a lot. I would say it is BiS (non-trial) for mag builds, so stick to your Inferno MS and transmute it to infused or precise.

From what I recall from your earlier thread you are mostly a solo PvE player? Does that still stand? If so, you can safely ignore most builds people say since they are optimized for group / trial play.

My recommendation would be to keep your 5 pieces of necropotence, and limit your mother's sorrow pieces to a total of 5 (and 2 out of 5 pieces would be from the staff). For the 2 extra slots, use 2 pieces from the "armor of the trainee" set (https://eso-sets.com/set/armor-of-the-trainee) This set drops from starter overland zones so should be very easy to get.

For the staves, stick with your mother's sorrow staves since you already have 2 of them.

Front bar : your preference whether fire or lightning staff. Fire staff will buff single target damage. Lightning staff will buff AoE damage and have AoE heavy attacks (very nice for hordes of enemies like you would encounter in a public dungeon). It would be nice to have both and use whatever is best for the content you are about to do. (another mother's sorrow lightning staff should be pretty cheap to get). For the enchantment, go for a fire dmg enchantment.

Back bar : Lightning staff (infused with weapon dmg increase glyph). Make sure to have wall of elements skill on this bar.

As for the traits, Precise is usually the best for front bar weapons. But charged and infused are both pretty nice traits for solo play and tends to be more interesting/fun. You can also change traits on your existing items later.

Pet builds should use lightning staffs as they routinely are also heavy attack builds. It doesn't matter what set staff you run if you are running a Necropotence + Mothers Sorrow build.

Non-pet or one-pet sorcs prefer inferno staffs, so you would want to lean this way. Just transmute it out of Charged and into Precise.

Like @LashanW said, Necropotence is preferably run with pet builds. You'd be better off running Siroria + Mothers Sorrow with a single pet setup. Or if you want non-trials gear, Burning Spellweave is good, too. There are plenty of sets out there, these are just a few. But you want something with Spell Damage to go with the Spell Crit Mother's Sorrow gives. Necropotence only adds magic, which is a nice resource pool for solo content like VMA where your resources can get drained quickly,, but doesn't do much for group PVE.

But if you are just running solo overland stuff, who cares. Anything and everything goes.

Thank you very much! You’ve just saved me 100,000 gold!

Also, if you can help me, shouldn’t I see some shock effect on my mobs? I see nothing and I’m wondering if that gold glyph of shock was a waste on my primary staff.

    Thanks!

I feel like I need more information to go on... If we are talking a casual PvE build for questing and such then what you have is fine, and you would probably benefit more from making your staff "Gold" than changing it for one with another trait.

I would keep the staves you have but transmute (or reconstruct) the Mother's Sorrow inferno staff to precise for more damage and Crit Surge procs.

Your next goal should be to trade out 2 armor pieces for a Monster set (Head and Shoulders). That way you will be running 2 Pieces of a Monster Set, 5 Mother's Sorrow, and 5 Necropotance.
    Playing since beta...

No problem! The shock glyph is single target and not really noticeable but it is there! It definitely wasn't a waste! Like others have said, you should try to get a monster set so you're not wasting two slot bonuses.

For solo, slimecraw is really good since you gives you minor buff permanently
For group settings, illambris, two piece crit and maw of infernal.

Yes solo PvE with only - pet now, the twilight Matriarch.

Great ideas. I was having a great deal of problem just using heavy attacks, so I changed front bar to:

L1 to Boundless Storm, Force Pulse, Crystal Frags, Consuming trap, Twilight, and Ultimate Fiery Rage.

    Back bar:

L1 Crit Surge, Unstable Wall OF STORMS, Daedric Prey, Elemental Suspectibility, Twilight, ultimate Atronach

I saw that I can change traits at Clockwork City, but I won’t have a ability to change it myself. Do other players do this for a fee? I’m on a PS4 so it’s really hard to use the virtual keyboard to talk.

Thanks for you making my understanding of this game better and better!

Yes you should. Reason is status effects. (status effects have a chance to proc from any specific type damage you do via abilities and enchantments, light and heavy attacks don't cause status effects). You can read this article (https://alcasthq.com/eso-status-effects/) if you wish to know more about status effects and other related stuff in this game.

Fire damage occasionally cause "burning" status effect on enemies and that causes additional fire damage over time.
Shock damage occasionally cause "concussed" status which makes the enemy more vulnerable, especially if there is a wall of lightning ability under the enemy. So even though shock glyph appears better, it is not. Because sorcs already have a high amount of lightning dmg abilities and it's fire dmg they lack. So fire glyph will be more useful.

I would suggest swapping boundless storm and Daedric prey. Usually you put abilities you cast often / spammable attacks on the front bar, and long lasting abilities on the back bar. This is to increase the time you spend on front bar during combat. I'd also suggest going for the crushing shock morph instead of force pulse since you are a solo player. Crushing shock will interrupt any channeling / casting enemies that you hit with it, which is more useful than a bit more aoe dmg when you are playing solo.

Unfortunately changing traits for your equipment is something only you can do. You just need to have researched the traits at crafting stations.

Thanks for setting me straight! I was hoping that I didn’t waste all that gold for a glyph that did nothing.

I know I really need a monster set. Since I’m solo 1 pet PvE I would naturally have a problem by myself in a vet dungeon 🙂. But I’ll keep tracking the major guild vendors; maybe the head/shoulders might come up for sale.

Thanks for giving me something new to think about beside rotations 😄

I haven't played for a while but you could get the monster set shoulders from running the Undaunted dailies for keys you can use to buy them from the quest givers. The helmets, though appearing randomly, can be bought through the weekly Golden Vendor. This is how I picked up my monster sets. Unless things have changed these are the only alternatives to getting them in veteran content as they are bound on pickup.

My main MS gold staff is inferno. That’s the one I added the shock glyph to. Now, to get what you’re saying through my thick head - are you saying that I should replace my shock glyph on my inferno staff with a fire glyph? To my knowledge, I can’t just remove the shock glyph; I can only replace it. If I’ve mistaken what you’ve said, blame it on my eso potato head 😂

Good ideas! With my setup now, I’m spending lots more time on the back bar than the front doing trash and bosses (except dolmens). I’m Crit Surging and Unstable Wall over and oven again to keep healing me. I’m still running the Twilight matriarch for emergency heals, but I’m getting better and better without her use. I’d also like to use CA, but I don’t have room for it ☹️

Oh boy. I’ll probably need to save up gold to buy a new one. I’m trying to get up legerdemain so that I can easily open chest, doing the Undaunted quests to get Mystic Orb and I’m trying to complete the totally mindless Mages quest. Leveling up weapons building, I think, is far beyond my ability. But thanks for dashing my hopes 🤣

Btw - thanks for the alcasthq link! Very informative!

Just to add a tiny bit to the respected replies you have received: It is very possible to "two-man" certain vet dungeons like Crypt of Hearts 1 where you get llambris - that's how we got our helms. Some elite types will probably comment that they could solo Vet Crypt 1 while eating a donut, or juggling ten pins. So if you have one friend go get it.

I wish I had friends - on PS4. Most of my friends are on PC. Foolish me thinking I could transfer to the PC server whenever I’m ready. Now I know it’s impossible 🤬😩

Perfectly fine for 95% of the content. Julianos and MS are some of the best non-trial combos imo.

Yes. Either buy or craft a fire dmg glyph and apply it on your MS inferno, it'll replace the current shock glyph.

I have 4 sets, Necro, MS, False God and Sioria. For my 3 pet sorc I have Nerco and MS staves but not FG and Sioria ones.

Not really sure what to use (currently Necro and False God and 2x 1pc crit monster sets)
