We already know that many players play more than one character. Zos sells additional character slots for a reason and that alone indicates many players play a great many alts.

Further, anyone who is a competitive raider knows most of those they raid with have multiple characters as we tend to do multiple score runs on different characters.

In the end, this is about account-wide achievements and I see nothing in the poll that offers any bearing on that subject.

It's not about account-wide achievements "in the end."

OP suggested this poll could shut down a degree of pedantic behavior in that other thread. As such this is very much about account-wide achievements because of that.

    One for each class.

Play all of them as characters, usually one at a time through storylines.

That's because this thread is nothing to do with account-wide achievements. The OP has simply picked up on a comment made in the separate thread on that subject and raised a new thread rather than derail that one.

I have some 42 characters across two accounts and on two servers, all active but with varying levels of activity as I switch between them. They're not alts or mules, but are all used for questing and other overland content.

I have several characters but only play a few of them on a regular basis.
I have 11 permanent characters and 1 Iron Vestige.

I play some more than others depending on what I am doing, but I tend to log on to each of them at least once a week.

I call myself an altoholic, lol, but there is only every a few that I play a lot and that can change over time depending on what and how I feel like playing. From when I started playing, I have had two mains: a nightblade with whom I do the most story, crafting, mat farming, scrying, etc. My other main is my templar healer (favorite role in group content) with whom I do vet dungeons and the occasional trial. But I expect to increase how much I play other characters as I try different styles of DPS and I would like to have a PvP character but haven’t figured out what I would most enjoy playing yet.

That is how I have played every MMO that I have played (SWTOR, GW2 and now ESO), with the number of characters I actually play a lot, have well-geared, and know something of what to do with, slowly increasing over time while my total number of alts expands somewhat faster than that! :joy:

Playing different characters makes it more fun for me and I would not like to play only one (even if they could have infinite skills, gear, etc.) as I enjoy different character concepts and I play my characters differently beyond their class and roles.

I have two characters and I play them both. One of them is used purely for solo overland content and casual, relaxed play (a merchant and trader).

I used to have many more characters but I found that increasingly contradictory to how I enjoy to play the game and the time I like to invest into them. Focusing on just two has been an absolute revelation for me.

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have 58 across two accounts on both PC megaservers. Some of everything and multiples of wardens and sorcs - lots of stam characters, lots of mag characters, a few tanky types, and a few hybrids.

I play whoever appeals when I start up in the morning. Generally I do riding training first on those who still need it; then I go to my 50s to craft, do master writs; once that's done, I decide who to play. I have a lot of 20s-30s, some real lowbies, and a few 30s-40s. I'm not in any rush to get all of them to 50. One account "main" on PC EU is 44, probably can get her to 50 during New Life.

Since I'm retired, I can (and do) play pretty much all day every day - around things like housework, shopping, cooking, laundry....

Usually anyway. Currently have 12 characters and it's hard to say I play any of them. Hard to wanna play them in the game's current state. Usually I would have a main character that I play for progression trials. Another one or two for fun runs, some for PvP, others for vMA weekly runs.

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have my main/favorite- a Breton magwarden. I play her probably 80% of the time. I've got two other magwardens that I use for PvP so that I can have one of each alliance to play with guildies. Then 2x magblade, a stamblade, stamplar, magplar, stamden, and magcro. I am not very good at nightblade, so my NBs are mostly crafters right now. Aside from daily writs, I play on my non-main probably once a week.

I don't care much about achievements but do wish rarely that I didn't have them spread across characters- I usually only quest when leveling a character or when there's an achievement furnishing I want, but c'est la vie. I don't much enjoy questing outside of a few instances, and torturing myself isn't worth it.

I have several characters but only play a few of them on a regular basis.
I might have chosen the first option, as I normally play on only one character per server and the rest are there more or less for "utility" reasons, but that isn't entirely accurate. I focus most on my main character on each server, and I seldom play on my other characters except to do daily crafting, trait research, and riding lessons, but I do play on some of them for working their way through the main quest and zone quests, although it's at a very leisurely pace.

The option I chose isn't entirely accurate, either, but it's more accurate than the first option. I have two characters per server-- main and secondary-- who are L50 and CP160+. I do play on my secondary characters from time to time, but not really often enough to qualify as "regularly." I enjoy developing them in different directions than I've taken my main characters in, and in some ways they're more capable than my main characters are, but I still tend to prefer playing on my main characters despite their shortcomings.

I have 13 characters, all L50. I started creating alts for the crafting writs but couldn't stand not having each of them maxed out. That requires going out to get skill points. At a minimum, every one of my characters has to be able to solo the group challenge in the public dungeons for the skill point. No lazy mules on my watch :) Now I'm starting to transform some of them for PVP.

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have 18, 3 of each class. While it would be a lie to suggest I actively play them all, I do use them all from time to time. I typically keep a dedicated Crafter, PVPer, PVE Healer, PVE Tank, Magic DPS, and Stam DPS ready to go at all times, and park the rest for writs. I also will occasionally (maybe once every 2-3 campaigns) make an effort to get 10-12 of them on the board for 50 transmutes.

My main Crafter, PVPer, Healer, and Tank are pretty much always the same 4 toons. The mag and stam DPS do cycle from patch to patch depending on Meta (right now I have a mageblade and a stamplar geared and ready to go).

My magic DK is also my quester, I actually did my first major reconstruction effort to gear him out for speedy questing, but to be honest, I am 4-5 DLCs behind on my questing. May or may not get around to it at some point. LOL

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have 16 max level characters, which breaks down into 15 legitimate characters plus my crafter.

Within those 15, I have one of nearly every Magicka/Stamina and class pairing (missing a stamBlade and stamPlar) plus a few tanks and healers. All races are represented except for Bosmer (but hey, I still have two slots left...).

All of them are geared for and participate in PvP. My most common race is Dunmer at 3 and my most common classes are Sorcerer and Necromancer at 4 apiece. Overall, I find Magicka builds more interesting to build and play than Stamina builds.

About half of my characters have meta PvE setups for their respective roles while the rest have more exotic or themed builds (because playing the same builds would drive me crazy).

Ultimately, having alts makes the game more interesting and provides for more varied gameplay experiences. It also gives you an outlet for theorycrafting which is what I personally find to be the most rewarding and intellectually engaging aspect of the game.

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have 7 characters. 3 are 'general use' characters, sort of like mains except there's 3 of them (khajiit templar, breton warden & argonian nightblade), 1 is a sorcerer I created basically because I didn't have a sorcerer, 1 is a nord dragonknight I'm trying to learn to tank on and 1 is a bosmer necromancer I created to do all the things my other characters wouldn't do because it's, well, evil. The last one is technically an imperial dragonknight but actually a dedicated crafter with just enough combat skills to stay alive while doing surveys.

I think I spend more time on my main 3 and the crafter than the others, but I do play all of them. The DK and necromancer tend to be the ones doing the events, especially if it involves camping out in a delve or something to kill the boss for tickets. They're not doing the story in order and both very impulsive people so it's easier for them to drop what they're doing for an event without it seeming weird or interrupting my normal play as much.

When I log in I decide what I feel like doing today and then pick the most appropriate character to play. Sometimes I'll stick with one for a while, sometimes I'll switch between two or three in an evening, it depends on what I feel like doing at the time.

(Technically I have another 4 as well, but 3 are on the NA server and I almost never log into it, and 1 is a mule I created shortly after getting the game - back when there were far more provisioning materials to deal with - and haven't used since storage chests were added but haven't deleted basically just because I don't need the slot yet.)

I'm considering making an orc werewolf too (not sure of the class yet) but haven't really decided.

I'm just going to wait until the OP provides the substantiation for claiming to know the basis on which most of us play different characters.

And I'm going to wait until you provide the substantiation for the opposite. Maybe it's just a matter of perspective, but I've been playing MMOs for 20 years or so now, and I've NEVER met anyone who didn't have at least 1 alt.

Maybe we should start a poll ?

Please do not start a poll that will not help.

In reality, it is meaningless to know why most people play alts. It is irrelevant as we know a great many people do plat alts. We know this as a fact because Zos has been selling extra character slots for years, as many MMORPGs do.

If that poll can shut down some degree of pedantic behaviour, then it won't be meaningless.

Cheers and have a great day.

I play a lot, all pretty casually.

For the last two Midyear Mayhems I took all 18 out to Cyrodiil earn geodes. And all of them still have Rapid Maneuvers.

All 18 have cleared at least 8 dungeons each and done at least 17 public dungeon group events.

10 have cleared regular Maelstrom Arena.

12 have cleared dungeons beyond the base 16. 6 have done so in vet mode.

4 have maxed out the Undaunted skill line.

I'm an altoholic, I have several characters and play them all.
I have 17 and play them all. Which one I'm on at any given time depends on what I feel like doing, they're all themed with different areas they excel in.

1 crafter, stam warden. I'm on her at least once a day. She's basically my account manager. She keeps my inventory sorted by deconing, refining, harvesting, putting things to sell on traders, excavating, master writs and of course she does her daily writs while I'm on her. She's first in line to learn all recipes, furnishing plans, and motifs and when I'm in a housing mood she's usually the one there decorating.

2 thieves, both nightblade, one mag one stam. They do the dirty farming; pickpocketing, lockboxes, breaking into homes, urn farming, IC farming. Very useful.

2 healers, templar and sorcerer, 2 tanks, DK and templar. These are my dungeon runners. When I want to gear farm or collect undaunted keys or now transmute stones these 4 are my go-to's. Whether I go tank or heal and which character for each role I pick depends on my mood, but if I really want to spend some time on it I'll burn through all 4.

The rest are various PvP builds, some best suited for the openness of cyrodill some for BGs or IC. Their PvP setups make them well suited for solo PvE as well so they're often my go-to for farming public dungeons, world bosses, maelstrom, things like that.

They mostly all have secondary things they do also. For example my crafter has a thieving setup with all the necessary passives so if I run through all my fence allowances on my 2 nightblades and want to continue thieving I go to her, she also has a stam healer setup and is 5th in line for dungeon running. My stamblade is my secondary crafter, so I try to do writs on him regularly and collect his hireling mats but he doesn't decon or refine, he's also one of my only characters with a proper dungeon dps setup on hand. That doesn't make him necessarily "6th in line for dungeons" though because all of my mag characters whether they're made for PvP or thieving have a secondary setup to queue as a dungeon healer and some of my stam PvP characters can setup to tank. One of my PvE healers, the sorcerer was actually made with Cyro healing in mind and is my best AP farmer, she also makes quick work of public dungeons and maelstrom. And the list of secondary roles for all of them goes on.

I don't really have a 'main' as I don't care about achievements from a completionist standpoint. If an achievement offers a character bound reward I do it on the character I want the reward for, if it's something account bound that I care about getting I do it on whichever I think would be the most fun, or most appropriate thematically to do it on. I don't want full account wide achievements because I find getting the character bound ones on characters who aren't necessarily built for the content to be a fun and rewarding challenge. Though if I had to name a main it would shared between my 2 Bosmers, that's my crafter and my stamblade, they're my most general purpose characters and the ones I'm on the most.

I also have a few still under 50. When I feel like leveling or am in the mood to quest I hop on one of these. They're usually the characters I quest through a new zone on, they don't get CP until they hit 50 in an attempt to keep overland fun. All of these under 50s have a theme tailored to what will likely be thier eventual primary use, but that can often evolve and change throughout the leveling process.

I don't have a single 'mule' type character, they're all fully functional. I'm not gonna lie and say it's easy to balance my time between them, they all still have things they can do to get better and it can be hard prioritizing, I feel like there's never enough time in the day. But in the end I'm ok with this, I did the whole "grind endgame get everything be the best" schtick in the past on other MMOs, and it was a great experience, but I'm older now, I work full time plus overtime so I just play as a hobby to unwind after work and on the weekends. Though I play with the same competitive spirit, always looking for a challenge and trying to improve, I still want to be the best, but I do it more casually and at my own pace.
